This monday I went exploring and checking out put-ins/take-outs for the winter. I also wanted to maybe hook a salmon on the yak. I managed one at High Rock about 15 lbs. I quit casting and just hung onto a horizontal log near where fish were rolling. I look at the ff and see good marks but figure it must be tree branches, but they would disappear and return. Okay, so I start jigging right under the boat and voila, fish on.
They were thick in there, the only hole with fish in it, and I checked out half a dozen others. Most of the fish I saw rolling were darkies, jacks, and occaisonal huge fish. After the one fish there no more takers. Then it started to rain, HARD. I ducked under a log and waited out the big drops. It was awesome with thunder and lightning!
I forgot my anchor but still managed to fish.
If you don't know where you're headed, any road could get you there.

Sweeeet, Juan!  Awesome photogs.  The river's been on my mind, but I haven't had time to do anything but look at it from 101...  Seeing pics of High Rock brings back memories - we were bad kids out there back in high school and after...    :smt002

Just wild steelies soon all C&R. You would think that there would be smallies, I 've fished it quite a bit and never seen one. There's gotta be some in there.
Group IQ is inversely proportional to the size of the group.

A Steelhead always knows where he is going, but a Man seldom does.

I'm happy you got a yak salmon Juan! They seem to be like hen's teeth this year so far. I hope I can join you one of these days. :smt010

The Little Cleo's a slammer on the Eel for salmon and sometimes steelhead, Naoaki.  I've caught many large salmon and a few hot steelhead on that very lure in the pic - nice one, Juan!   :smt002

Great report Juan, the Eel needs your kind of publicity. Did you park and paddle or shuttle? Streamtime maps say they're coming out with a new edition for the Eel and other northcoast rivers. Are you gonna do a fishing on the Mattole this season?
