Anything and everything you can think of. Depending on how long you will be here will determine what you need. Right now salt water rockfish are off limits. You still have trout, bass, sturgeon, stripers, salmon just to name a few so bring whatever you have in your arsenol.

Howdy Shawn! I grew up in Houston and my parents still live there. Here is what you should bring:

1. Some decent cajun food.
2. Some TexMex
3. Crawdads
4. Real BBQ
5. At least a dozen pecan pies.

Lake fishing is pretty much the same though you will probably want a light setup for trout fishing. If you are still going to be around in the spring and summer I would bring the heaviest stuff you have. ABU 6500, Avet SX etc are the standard rockcod setups around here.

Bill, I hope you do remember that real BBQ in Texas means beef ribs, not pork ribs.

Shawn now is a good time to fish for Stripers in the Bay and the Delta. Lots of fun, and easy to catch with crankbaits, lipless crankbaits, jigs, and bait. Not to mention Largemouth Bass in the Delta.
Post in the hookup section I am sure you'll gets some bites.

Don't worry about the BBQ and Tex-Mex (I can make those myself a lot better than you can buy around here, and any damn fool knows barbecue is made from beef brisket, smoke, time, and anything beyond that is strictly optional). And pecan pies aren't that tough to find. Some genuine Rex crab boil (not the Zatarain's stuff), if you can find it, would make you a wealthy man. But most of all, bring a few Whataburger franchises. I got hooked on those not long after they started expanding beyond Corpus Christi, and still have to overdose whenever I get back to Texas. You can even find Popeye's chicken here, if you hunt hard enough, but the closest Whataburger is somewhere in Arizona.

Never mind the Rex Crab Boil. Despite the fact that I've failed to find any of it the last three times I've been to Texas, a little Googling turned up an online source, so I'll soon have a long-time supply laid in.
As far as In-and-Out burgers go, if you like those, you'll probably like the fact that we not only have some of those here, we also have Starbucks on just about every corner. (Sorry, couldn't resist. When you get here, try Graffeo coffee, available in their stores in San Francisco and San Rafael. That'll wash down even those little greaseballs and leave a good taste in your mouth.)
OK, back to your original question. I spent several decades fishing bay and offshore, primarily Galveston and Freeport, more recently concentrating on Copano Bay. Lots of wading, etc., in the nice warm water. Bring everything you have to keep yourself warm and dry, or you'll freeze your butt off here. We used to start wading in Galveston when the beach water temperature reached 85 degrees. Here, it's more likely to be 55. And unless you go way, way south of the SF area, that's the way it's going to be, all year long. There's lots of good fishing here, quite different from that in Texas, but precious little warm water unless you hit some of the inland lakes in late summer.

Shawn

I have extra paddles and can loan you one if I fish this weekend. Check the hookups section Friday night. Will be freshwater for me this weekend. Need to get tuned up for the trout derby 12/8.
