I am going on a 2 day tuna/yellowtail/dorado boat out of H&M Landing July 10-12, I am bringing my kayak so I can beach launch and target yellowtail/dorado around kelp patties the days before that trip. Where should I launch? What should I do? I am pretty experienced in our waters, but never kayaked in So Cal.

Thank you!

La Jolla Shores - You can drive and unload at the end of Avenida De La Playa. Then if early enough, you can find a place nearby to park in the neighborhood. Otherwise there is a beach lot about a 1/4 mile away. The beach showers and bathrooms are between the launch and lot.
You have to get out past the Marine Reserve line either off the large hotel near the point (1/2 mile?) or go north to past the Scripps Pier - which is further. Most go to the point. It drops off pretty good somewhat north of the point, with more kelp beds located around the end of the point and southward.
The plan is usually to sabiki up some mackerel just past the line and then fly-line those or maybe add a small weight.
I have only caught bait 2x out of 5 and never got a yellowtail, just Calico Bass.
But I have not done a serious attempt, just rented a paddle kayak for 2-3 hours with limited tackle and no fishfinder.
Bonito were there last week too. I saw one powerboat get a yellowtail, but some kayakers also did apparently.
Launch and landing can be tricky, but water is not that cold. No wetsuit needed, but sunscreen is a must.

Thanks, Joe. La Jolla Shores is what I got from Google searches too. I was/am more concerned about parking and MPA boundaries. I will be bringing my own kayak and setup, including GPS, but I don't have an MPA layer on it. I suppose I can use an app on my phone. I have a Stealth, I should be good going through the surf.

You might want to consider Gaia GPS. I use that in my iPhone all the time, and it shows MPAs and more.

The parking/unloading info here is great.

I took my kayak down there once and, for my first and only ocean launch, it went pretty smoothly. Regarding the MPA, I also was concerned - I remember seeing this thread in my research which seems accurate by Google maps:
https://www.bdoutdoors.com/forums/threads/avoiding-la-jolla-mpa-without-gps.857056/
The flag-building triangulation was confirmed by some other kayakers I met at launch, apparently it's a common local rule of thumb. About a minute after I got into the zone, I saw one of them bring in a 25lb+ yellowtail on an iron. Minus a little bonito I picked up on a swimbait, I didn't have the same luck!
