The forecast was perfect so I squeezed in a trip to Berryessa this morning, making it back in time for a late afternoon work meeting.

I launched at Smittle creek and in less than 10 minutes, while still deep in the cove my downrigger rod goes off and after a nice fight on ultralight Kokanee gear I land a 22” salmon.
But then I try high and low for the next 5.5 hrs with only one hookup - seemed like a Kokanee- that came undone near the boat.
So what seemed like a promising start ended as another 1-fish day at Berry targeting salmonids.
What a tease that lake is! I think that was the 3rd or 4th time it’s done that to me.

Don't feel bad,  same scenario Thursday,  cept it was bass, in 8 fow at the launch...
Watched them follow me along the dropoff right up to the boat.
Only saw 1 guy with 2 ,

Did get to watch 2 pairs of bald eagles getting after it over the north launch that’s closed.
Awesome day for it...
Any day on the water  beats being in town.

How is the landlocked salmon vs the ocean run salmon food-wise?

The salmon was pretty good. Very subtle salmon flavor, so sort of disappointing if one was expecting ocean salmon, but no pondy taste at all. Was also good second day cold. It may have been my largest FW salmon at 21”-22”.
