Chef and I decided to give Moss a try.  I'm going after work and should be there about 8 or 9am.  Chef should be there around 6 or 7am.  I'll be monitoring channel 69.  Sorry for the last minute notice.  Company welcome as usual.

Thanks for the call, if it wasn't for the work responsibility I'd be right with ya.

Good luck to you and chef!

If you're going to try Moss, I'd just leave the trolling stuff and just bring a few mooching rigs, a slider, and a small assortment of lead balls (2,3,5,6,8,12 oz).  This set works great for "trooching" too.

As Stu said, it's tough to troll deep (over 60 ft) effectively with the typical heavy 1 to 2 lb balls.

Now, Linda Mar is a different story since you're fishing in depths of only 18 to 60 ft.  With spectra, I've trolled effectively with 6 to 12 oz balls or used a Deep Six diver.  Watermelon Apexs, FBR's, Krippled Anchovies, and RSK work well for trolling.

Chuck,
12oz  Damn Chuck!!!  :smt103

When mooching on a yak, I usually go with 1,2,3 oz with 15lb spectra.  I go up to 4 oz,  but that usually means its quitting time!!!
If using mono, a little more weight would be needed.

At around 3 or 4 oz, the rod goes between the legs and I paddle to slow the drift for a better bait presentation.

I'd bring the trolling rod for the paddle out/in.  Never know when you will get hit.

In Monterey Bay, July/August were usually good months.  By the beginning of Sept, the fish will head up to spawn and it will be over till next year.

the act of mooching BUT with very slow paddling involved....basically, tuck the butt of your rod under your right thigh and lean the rod against your left shin - then paddle in and out of the bait balls. It a combination of trolling and mooching = trooching.  :smt002

Good luck at Moss fellas! Go catch a 26 pounder  :smt002

Sorry, Sean... I take it back.  After yesterday, I guess it pays to bring some trolling gear to Moss.  I was surprised that the Deep Six Diver worked out there since they realistically dive only about 30 to 40 feet.

Last season I mooched for about 6 hours for a couple of light bites with no hookups.   :smt015   I put on the Deep Six for the ride back in and hooked up in about 5 minutes.   :smt001   Went back the next week and started trolling right off the bat, had my limit in a couple of hours.  They really do work!  :smt023

BTW, anybody heading out to Moss tomorrow (Sat 7/9)?  I'm probably going, would be nice to have company.  I drive a granite (gray) Hobie Mirage Outback...

I'm getting rid of the Pink Lady diver and getting a deep six instead. IMO: The Pink Lady does not seem to work well when the swells are big. It seems to plane upwards if you can't keep at a consistent pace when paddling  :smt011 (which is hard to do when the swells are sucking you back every now and then)

What's the weight  (or size) of the deep six that you guys use?

Stu, I agree.  I only break out the 12 oz ball when I feel the need to troll a bit.  And for a 12 oz. ball, I usually use a sinker release.
