Brings back a lot of great memories. We would do a yearly trek to dads camp every august in the late 70's. Our trip coincided with a celebration the Yurok tribe held. We camped on the beach at a campground that no longer exists.

The pic is of a green sturgeon I caught from the surf. I was fishing for huge redtaill perch and was fortunate to land this from the surf. Green sturgeon are no longer legal to keep. Probably one of the best tasting fish i ever had.

Cool story. Sturgeon (green or otherwise) from the surf has got to be a rarity.

My dad was a guide there in the 30’s and it was crazy then. We camped at Dad’s camp in the 50’s and 1960.

Cool! Looks like they were getting them on spinners, rather than flossing them.
If you don't know where you're headed, any road could get you there.

I've had many great trips up there. The Spit can be crazy at times with the combat fishing, dodging the tribal fishing nets and getting your fish in before a Sealion eats it. We prefer fishing up river a little at the Glen or Baker beach, though it can get crazy there on the weekend too.
I fish, therefore I Cuss and Lie!

A revered former PE teacher of mine, Chuck Blackburn, guided there in its 'glory days,' in fact he wrote a book about it. The book is called Kneebockers, and it covers his early days and how he arrived here in Del Norte county.

It's an amazing story that any fishermen or person that knows anything about the area would enjoy reading. He died about 15 years ago when I was about 55.

I remember going to his book signing and greeting him as "Mr. Blackburn." He reminded me that I could now call him Chuck. I said to him, "No, Mr. Blackburn, you'll always be Mr. Blackburn to me." Yeah, one of those kinds of role models.
