Authorities confirmed Thursday that Erica Fox, 55, a swimmer who was found dead last month after a swim in Monterey County, was killed by a shark.

The Santa Cruz County Sheriff-Coroner identified Fox as the victim found floating near Davenport a week after she went missing on Dec. 27, 2025, about 25 miles north of Lovers Point in Pacific Grove. Although multiple witnesses reported seeing a shark near where Fox disappeared, the coroner did not officially confirm a shark bite until Thursday.

The attack marks the first fatal shark incident at Lovers Point in more than 70 years.

“The Santa Cruz County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office has determined the cause of death to be sharp and blunt force injuries and submersion in water due to a shark attack,” the office said in a statement Thursday. “The manner of death has been ruled an accident.”

Fox was reported missing Dec. 21, 2025, after she failed to return to shore with her swim group, the Kelp Krawlers. Witnesses that morning reported seeing a shark breach just offshore at Lovers Point, where Fox had been leading a group of about a dozen swimmers.

According to her husband, Jean-Francois Vanreusel, Fox was identified by her white Garmin watch and an electromagnetic shark deterrent still attached to her ankle.

“The Sheriff’s Office once again extends its deepest condolences to Erica Fox’s family and friends during this difficult time,” the sheriff’s office said.

The search for Fox involved multiple agencies, including the U.S. Coast Guard, Pacific Grove Police, Monterey County Sheriff’s Office divers, and Monterey firefighters, who conducted roughly 15 hours of air and water operations before the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office took over when the body was found a week later.

Fox, 55, co-founded the Kelp Krawlers two decades ago to train in the open waters off Pacific Grove, becoming a central figure in the tight-knit swimming community. A seasoned triathlete, she worked at Elroy’s Fine Foods market in Monterey.

Her father, Jim Fox, said she ran her first 10K race at age 7. Her home was filled with triathlon medals, including awards from the famed Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon in San Francisco.

Shark attacks on humans are rare worldwide, including along California’s coast.

Since 1950, sharks have killed 16 people in California, according to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. All involved great white sharks except one October 2023 case at Point Reyes National Seashore, where the species was unconfirmed.

In the Monterey area, 13 people have been bitten by great white sharks since 1950, resulting in two deaths, nine major injuries, and two minor injuries. Most victims were divers or surfers – only two were swimmers.

Fox’s death is the third shark-related incident at Lovers Point since June 2022 and the first recorded death since 1952.

In 2022, another Kelp Krawler, Steve Bruemmer, was seriously injured while swimming, and two months later, a paddleboarder and his dog were thrown from their board but unharmed after a shark bit it from below.

Experts say there is no clear pattern behind recent shark encounters, emphasizing that the ocean is a dynamic environment where humans enter the natural habitat of marine predators.

“When we enter the sea here, we are entering a marine wilderness,” Barbara Block, a Stanford University marine sciences professor based at Hopkins Marine Station in Pacific Grove, said shortly after Fox’s disappearance was reported. “It’s similar to walking into Yellowstone Park — but instead of wolves or grizzlies, we have white sharks.”

One prevailing theory is that sharks mistake humans for prey, while another is that they use their mouths to investigate unfamiliar objects as potential prey.

Chris Lowe, director of the Shark Lab at California State University, Long Beach, said the rocky coastline near Lovers Point attracts sea lions, and seals also frequent offshore waters — both primary prey for great white sharks.

“We’re clearly not on the menu,” Lowe previously said. “Otherwise people would be bitten and eaten all the time.”

In recent years, swimmers, divers, and surfers, including Fox’s swim club, have turned to electromagnetic devices or other shark deterrents. While opinions on their effectiveness are mixed, experts stress there are no guarantees in the open ocean.

Even before the cause of Fox’s death was confirmed, the swim club began reassessing their tradition of swimming at Lovers Point.

“I’m going to say it’s time,” Bruemmer told this news organization last month. “Erica was the founder of the Kelp Krawlers, and this should be the last swim at Lovers Point.”
