Haven't seen anything about cause of death. Collision? Health problem? other? Sad he's gone. Glad he was found. Hurts every time the ocean claims someone.
my new name should be Ostridge. Got my head in the sand. Going fishing and letting go of the other stuff I can't control anyway!

really saddened by this.
RIP Mikey.
a strange set of circumstances must be involved as he was known for being prepared and was definitely a seasoned small boater.

Lots of rumors going around. But from what I read, someone who saw the GoPro footage is that he was hooked up on a fish and the line wrapped around his motor prop. Couldn’t get it untangled and possibly flipped. From then I’m not sure what happened.

Part of the reason I never like the 2019+ Hobie outback’s was that the rudder couldn’t propped up above the water line.  If your rudder gets tangled you can’t prop it up to untangle rope or line like the prior generation outbacks.

He got the line tangled in the prop, lifted the engine to clear the line, flipped, then righted the boat. Then, since the engine was swamped, he was trying to get that going and that's when he made his mayday call, and he flipped again since water was in the hull and made the boat unstable, and that was the last set of calls received.  There was no collision, no drug runners/cartel, and no sharks.

Heading to the San Diego area on 12/13 for a memorial paddle and wreath send off to honor Mikey. Heading down with a few buddies. Been a rough few days but the support and community rallying has been amazing to see.

Stay safe out there and hope to see y'all soon!

Sad news. His stoke was amazing.
I imagine just being stuck out there for over a day or two would lead to severe dehydration. You can go weeks without food but not many hours or days without water. I'm not sure if soaking in the ocean would stave that off - probably eliminates some water loss through perspiration.
I had an incident of pretty severe dehydration due to an unplanned overnight on a cliff back in my climbing days. Dry-heaving, then tingling arms, overall body feeling horrible with resting not helping. Made it back to the car and water/drinnks, but felt like I could have collapsed at any time over the last few hours of hiking out. Pee'd reddish for a couple days after that. I'm pretty amazed at people who survive weeks or months on lifeboats.

Wow thats really scary and glad you are ok. it makes me want to stash some extra water bottles in my kayak. I keep 12 gallons of water on my boat in case of emergency but it only helps if its accessible and can be disconnected from the vessel

So sad.  :(

This sounds a bit like what I expected... nothing particularly crazy, just engine trouble and the difficulty of trying to repair something like that on a skiff way out in the ocean. I've seen some of his vids and while he got amazing speed and distance out of that skiff, I was thinking to myself it would not be an easy thing to flip that over and re-board repeatedly. He has bars and a bunch of gear on the rails and it seems like it would be challenging even for someone experienced and in good shape like he obviously was (my fat ass would not be able to do it even once I bet).

The whole thing does have me looking at PLBs though (even if my kayaking tends to be relatively conservative and close to shore, would still make me feel better)
