Hi folks,

I'm going crabbing tomorrow, on a power boat! So I'll be going a bit deeper. I have strong leaded rope for my main line. But I have separated my buoys so I can easily add additional shots of line as needed.

For the buoy, I'm using 3/8", poly hollow braid rope. It says it has a safe working load limit of 200 pounds, but doesn't mention tensile strength and I can't find it on the OEMs website. It has to be strong enough to withstand the force of the buoy being pulled in the water on the crab trap.

Is this strong enough, or do you think the force on the buoy will break it and I'll lose my hoops / traps?

I could buy some new rope and redo them all, but before I go that route, I wanted to get some POVs.

thanks!
Stewart

Your rope is plenty strong. Good luck!

Thank you!

Has anyone else used 3/8" hollow braid poly and have a pov? I'd love to get a couple of people to tell me "it's fine", so I don't have to re-tie everything tonight :-)

I use the stuff that my hoops came with, probably 1/4 or 3/8" braided hollow poly.  Never had a problem.

Assuming your knots are good it's fine.

Put a weight on the line so it doesn't foul anyones  prop!

Thanks all. The line held! I still wish I got a stronger rope just for my own peace of mind, which probably says more about my mind then the rope itself

If there was more than 200lbs of force wouldn’t that pick up the trap? I’m thinking the trap would need to weigh more than 200lbs and the float would need to generate enough force to break the rope. Neither one seems likely.
