I shocked myself.

I was on various prescription meds.  I was fat (fatter?).  really fat.  I had a scare, and quit drinking booze, quit sugar, and cut out white rice.  all that was fine, but I started running.

my first mile sucked.  I was wheezing, and had to stop multiple times.  turns out the first month of running sucks.  lots of thoughts of quitting and stuff.  but I kept at it.  wake up at 4:30, grab a flashlight, leash up Hank and we went.   I remember making the mile non stop.  then it because 2 miles..then 3.  I have been jogging 3 miles for one year.  I run every morning unless I was going kayak fishing.  bass, rockfish, whatever.   no fishing?  I jog.   I missed maybe  7-14 days due to rain or being sick.  my doc took me off of my meds.

yesterday was sick!!!  I had signed up for a 10k race.  it was yesterday.   I dont know what it was.  the energy of 1000 runners, or just being nervous about it all.  I ran 6.2 miles NON_STOP!! averaging 9.5 minutes per mile.  I did a 10k in under an hour!!!  I was stoked!!  my wife was cheering me on.  it was fun..and I ran it with some coworker-friends.

we are signing up for the next one tomorrow, in Davis.  the Davis Stampede 10k.  hahha

oh, I had some beer to celebrate.  it was the IPA-10k.

Congratulations man, uplifting story!   Every time I let my exercise and weight slip, my key vitals remind me why that's a bad idea. Keep it rolling!!

Congratulations! Running more than a mile non-stop is an achievement, 6+ is just crazy, haha. Awesome that you stuck with it, and that it became a lifestyle rather than a chore.

That’s awesome.
I’m not much of a runner but will do 2.3 miles in the hills with Mabel. With the hills, I end up with a 11 - 13 minute mile pace, so more like jogging. I prefer trail running with the variability, views, wildlife, etc. . I like the challenge of hills. I think trail running also avoids some of the repetitive stress injuries of road running, although there is more of a hazard of tripping, sliding, ankle twisting and generally wiping out.
Brazen Racing has several 5k, 10k, marathon events around the area.

If you don't know where you're headed, any road could get you there.

see you there!!!  I am paid up...10k only for me.    a half-M feels impossible at this point.   I think the training will ruin me, my knees, my feet...:D

Running is my other favorite past time besides kayak fishing. The runners high feels great, it keeps you healthy and is very addicting. I ran the SF marathon, Avenue of giants and next year doing Big Sur.

Darth, that's so great you're getting into it.  Hope you're able to sustain your interest and avoid injury!

I've run and raced alot through the years, mostly coincident to triathlon, but also many stand alone running events up to ultra distance.  Last year, I really enjoyed the turkey trot, santa fun run and some of the other events around san jose and campbell.

During covid a college classmate and I wanted to catch up.  I talked him into trying to run ~57 miles from my house in San Jose to SF.  Plan was to proceed through the night and arrive at the Ferry Building in time for a triumphant brunch with the ladies the next day.

We left after work - that late start would lead to our demise.  By 10PM, barely made it to the Safeway on Main St. in Los Altos for dinner and red bull.  By midnight, Menlo.  0200, Belmont.  That's when Manual revealed a toe nail had dislodged, and he wanted to bail.  I decried him for being soft as baby isht, seeing as we'd barely ticked 32 miles.  We went another mile or so, but he would go no further.  He pulled his toe nail, then we pulled the plug, and called uber.  Slept that night like a newborn, awoke as defeated and broken old dudes :jerk:
