facinating stuff.

as a bass fisherman, this technique speaks to me.   working a lure.

I am homing in on my first set up.   I'll buy the reel in Japan for sure.
but the various things in the rods was a lot of info.  different guide configurations, lengths, action,..it was a lot!!

I dont even really own any jigs yet!  hahha...

I am also enamored of slow pitch jigging. Of course, most of the time in Northern California we use spj for rockfish that would bite just as well (or better) on bait fished from a broom handle.

I went with the Shimano grappler off ebay.  I "attempt" slow pitch and I find it to be quite effective. It weighs nothing yet fully parabolic and has managed some fatties... :smt006

On clearance.
Mine is b66-2. Made in China

Or lingcod that would eat the broom handle...
I don't like stuff that sucks.

I technically do "slow pitching" but I do enjoy using slow pitching rod for slow trolling for ling and halibut because of the parabolic/moderate action and the weight of the rod. I recently bought one of the most affordable slow pitching rod shimano talavera type j slow 6'6" after breaking my goofish slow pitch rod with my car door. it's seems pretty nice so far. Only downside is it's does not have the spiral guide like the goofish. I do plan to do some actual slow pitch jigging in the future.

What about your technique is not SP?  I have a spiral wrap heavier rod that is for fish out of my class.  It still works for heavier jigs.  I miss the spiral wrap when using my grappler.  I'm not so obsessed with vertical but it is a key factor.   That is why the drift chute comes in handy. :smt006

I own several Okuma and Tsunami Trophy Slow Pitch rods.  The Tsunami TSSPJC-701H, has been my favorite; I own 2 of them. 7 years old and still going strong.

I read posts that getting parts and getting reels serviced on Japanese reels here in the US is a no-go.

The slow pitch thing hasn’t jigged me into striking range of those expensive rods. Having to do more physical work just isn’t appealing. Laziness is one of the most primal survival instincts! Plus my hands are getting old; holding a rod in my right hand too much hurts on a knuckle or two. Best for me to get lines down and rods into rod holders until there’s a takedown.

I talked to a couple of shops.  they said they can fix them.  my bass reel guy said he can as well.  I'm not too worried about it.   I can buy a new reel and send one back to the motherland if need be.

half of my bass reels are from Japan, and I get them tuned and stuff regularly out of MN.

I like the idea of a lighter rod, Moo. What jig weight class goofish did you try? Not sure I understand the advantage of spiral either. trying to learn now!

from what i understand.  the spiral wrap allows the tip guide to be facing downwards.  that way if the line come up and over the rod, it just slips off.   we all know the fishing line and the rod tip has a strange unexplainable gravitational pull to each other.  in SPJ, the fish can grab on at any time.  if the line is wrapped, and the fish is big.   bad juju.

6'6 pe 2-4 jig 120-350 was the one that I had. It helps with the rod twisting under load. Like when you have a big fish on your reel want to lean to one side and you have to fight it to keep it straight up, it helps with that greatly.
