I honestly never concerned myself with winds and swells at the ocean.

now?  yea.  kinda important to me, and I am interested.

I imagine the ocean gets generally less favorable to kayak fishing?  fall to winter?

Not necessarily less favorable, just gotta pick your days.  Some of the best days I've had on the ocean were in November and December.  The nice days tend to be nicer, because the temperature difference inland isn't enough to create the gusty afternoons that are often present in the summer.  Finding those lulls between storms can also make for great fishing conditions.

That said, the crappy days tend to be MUCH crappier.  Evaluating go/no go is often a lot easier in winter - it's usually pretty clear at first glance of the forecast.

Bodega harbor,  I'll get coastal shot later
Any day on the water  beats being in town.

October, November and December can have some of the best days. Also the old crab/rockfish combo!
But with storms, it helps to have a flexible work schedule and let Windy be your guide to sick days.

As others observe, the last three months of the year the best. The wind generally drops and you get lots of glassy days after the almost constant higher winds during summer, you just have to work around the storms. July-September I'll get a few days in here and there, but for me the season really gets going in October.
