I went out there only once, by myself and should not have done that,  the only smart thing I did that day

was go back in.

I most likely will not go unless one or two people who have a better understanding of this area

are in.  It looks to me as though ya kind of have to get out there a ways because it's so shallow for a

long time..being the launch is by a reef and all.  that's what kind of made me uneasy when I went out

there.

"I'm a mile off the beach, and marking 8'...WTF? " Was running through my head and it was January,

      Prime Whitey season... :shark

Got freaked out by a fin that was Following me, turned out to be a Cargo Box!!!!

Anyway, I think you " Get My Drift ",

That area deserves a little experience to go with it...Danglin

I'm still thinking of it. I will probably launch at my usual spot, right at the mouth of the lagoon, unless there is a better spot...has anyone else launched at the tennis courts? i haven't. If that is safer/better than the lagoon entrance, I'll do that.
May the fish be mighty and the seas be meek...

I watched that lagoon area for a long time, easy in and then take on the rip rap @ the " Mouth ",

I launch over by the tenis courts, wheeled in, kind of a small hassle getting by the gate entrance

because it's too narrow.  wheeled down the beach a bit and the launch was not bad, but it was rocky.

could be a drag in bigger surf. I also got disoriented out there and landed north of my launch, which also

was a hassle because I had to get over rocks on the beach to get out...

Ya, not my best day :smt009....

So, if getting throught he rip rap out there is not too bad, that might be the better spot..

Blue? any tips? ....Looks like the Blind leading the Blind ..... :smt004..... Danglin

I'm definitely launching.
This will/could be my last trip out for salmon this year.
Getting to be more interested now, in ducks & pigs.

My alarm is for 6:30; Will cross Richmond Bridge at 7:45; Get to Stinson by 8:40;
Bolinas launch 9:20.

I've never used wheels on that ramp, always carried.
But I can see how wheels would hang up on that narrow passage.

Sharks are no more a risk here than anywhere providing you dont make bait of yourself:
     1)  Never EVER gut, gill, or bleed fish while at sea
     2)  Contain your bait in zip locks
     3)  Do NOT pee-your-pants where it'll run out the scuppers
     4)  Optional but-very-very-smart:  I carry a "dry bag"...and contain my catch in it.

(I've been kayak-fishing since 1972)

Rocks.....are not an issue at Bolinas.   You'd have to work at hitting one.

Except for very high tide conditions (which causes "the break" to come all the way up into the concrete ramp at the "tennis court" launch).....I can't see that anyone who has DONE both launch sites, would ever opt for the Lagoon-side.   Hi-Tide tomorrow is at 8:40 a.m. but will be only 5.5 feet.

Like everything having to do with kayaking-----the boater stands on the beach or above the rapid and makes his decisions on the basis of what he sees then and there.    Never ever do what anyone tells you "you can do.."...   Never ever.

A back-pocket fact about Bolinas......Duxbury Reef will "break" all quoted N & NW swell-heights at the Bolinas Beach by a little less than half.    When the swell is from the South, however, it is unaffected and rolls in at full height.

For all of you interested in going tomorrow, the Coastsiders have not posted on today's bite...I'm wondering if the bite is still on.

I happen to have a great view from my home office and as i write this I can see a few boats lingering off Dux. There were a lot more this morning, so either they all limited or the fishing sucked and they scattered.

Not much of a report, but it's all i can see from where I'm sitting!

I used to be an Oregon surf-casting fan but the on-shore wind always blew my tackle straight back at me, it was a discouraging dilemma.

Then one Saturday in l972 I was watching the Olympic Games being televised out of Munich Germany.  The germans had made "whitewater kayaking" THEIR Optional Sport.

So this guy is coming down the course and he capsizes.   Whoa...!!!....And I'm thinking:  "It's all over for you, bud..."...when he rolls back up...!!!...

And I'm on my feet yelling.......

"THAT'S AN UN-SINKABLE BOAT...!!!..."....

And that very Monday I was buying my first kayak.   Taught myself the E-roll out of a book.  Was fishing the Ocean for a YEAR before I accidentally met the first other kayakers I had seen up to them....and they talked me into doing rivers.

I learned the sport in conventional sit-inside boats and so I use them exclusively myself.  Sit-insides are a warmer boat, on a cold day...and because of the E-roll we are bomb-proof.    But we are also cramped-as-hell and lack storage space because "at sea" we have no access at to our hatches and much-vaunted "storage space."   And when conditions are rough we are reluctant to pull the sprayskirt open for any period of time.

I am an outspoken, total and unqualified admirer of SOTs.     SOTs are extremely functional and utilitarian.   They are a way-better platform for hunting and fishing than sit-inside boats.   They are a Great Great Great invention.    Bless the SCUBA divers who invented them.

============

BLEEDING FISH AT SEA:

anyone who bleeds fish aboard his boat in shark waters --- on the reckless ground, in terms of FORSEEABLE consequences, that "my salmon will go soft"..........is NOT thinking the thing through.

Heck man, if you're that concerned about the quality of your salmon-flesh, it's worth a trip to the beach-----DO IT THERE......and then contain that bleeding fish......in a dry-bag.

I mean-------HOLY TOLEDO--------every boater must come to grips with the fact that if he paddles around out there trailing blood in the ocean-----something's going to come eat him.

Why------would-------that-------not------happen--???-----

We are all fishermen......right?
And all we fishermen know that fragerant bait is The Thing....right?

Along the same lines:

Seals and Sea Lions pee in the ocean.
So Pee is an attractant to sharks.
Now if your boat is leaking pee...........

It's easy to pee in a baggie......and dump it overboard....and then paddle
briskly from that spot.    This is my technique, and I recommend it.

When I bait a hook with chovy....I do wash my hands and then paddle briskly from that spot.

Why make bait of yourself----for no reason?

Judd
