The other day a boater on the radio (in Capitola) was asking about calico bass. Apparently, he had caught one.

I was at Monterey last Sunday and while I was heading in, I ran into a kid doing some kayak fishing under the pier. He knew he wasn’t supposed to fish there but he did. We chatted a little bit about my catch and he showed me how easy it was to instantly hook a calico bass right between the piling. Like he was fishing for bluegill or something. It was that easy for him because he confidently offer to show me that they’re everywhere there. It was a nice size too. About 9-10in. I didn’t want to get too close to the piling because there were seals everywhere. That kid were pushing away the seals with his paddle because he needed to drop his jig right where they were laying down. I was more amazed with that than seeing a calico bass being caught here in Northern California.
The tug on the line is the heartbeat of the soul.
