Mr. X plans to sail his Hobie Tandem Island from the northernmost part of Washington to San Francisco. I believe that he is planning on leaving home today, and once he's on the water, he estimates it'll take 3 weeks. I'll be sending him weather updates and tracking his progress via his InReach.

I'll post updates here...

Good to hear Mr. X's status.  I hope he publishes his report again on our site.
Good luck, Mr. X, and safe journey.

Mr. X has called it quits. Here is the text I received this morning:

"Last night hit by something, maybe whale, my kayak can’t be used anymore, luckily can emergency landing, no luck"

Based on followup texts, it seems that whatever he hit broke an aka pin, then in the cold and dark, he lost a spare aka pin in the water and broke another. He also says that he now plans to sell his TI, in case you are looking for a high-mileage sailing kayak...

Glad he is ok. It did not seem like favorable ocean conditions??. Unless it was more equipment malfunctions?

That's all I got out of the text messages. Maybe there is more to the story.

I met with Mr. X before he left, and if I'd noticed that he (apparently) only had 2 spare aka pins, I'd have given him a bunch more (I carry more than 2 spares just for a day of fishing on my AI).

He doesn't seem to be on NCKA anymore, but I'll try to get him to post an update. In any case, I'll meet with him when he gets home and let everyone know if I learn anything more...

I would be interestd if he's parting it out because I have one with just the hull I'm using as an oasis for more room  :smt044

You know, it might actually be worth more if he parts it out, since the hull has a major patch job. If he does, so, I call dibs on the amas...
