Hey there.. Name is Brian. New to kayak fishing and just picked up a '24 Outback. Looking forward to getting out there and hopefully meeting some of you guys along the way. My loose plan is to start with some local lakes and eventually work my way out to some saltwater after I get more experience.

I just went out with Eric for my first NorCal ocean kayak fishing and it was amazing. I highly recommend you go out with him.

Welcome! Check out some of my recent posts on the napa river. Cullinan ranch is a great place to learn how to kayak. You launch in the back of the pond and then fish your way out to the openings. Great fishing too! There is current once you go out of the openings but you can ease your way into it. You can ride the current from one opening to another and then tuck back into the pond. That is where I got my introduction to saltwater kayaking. The straits are great practice for the ocean too but they can be just as treacherous so be careful.

Welcome!  Lots of good folks on the board here, and lots of good fishing within an hour of Benicia.  Look for hook ups - a chance to meet folks from NCKA and learn a little about a fishing spot.  I fish Benicia a few times a year for stripers, mostly in the fall - good fun out there!

Berryessa is pretty close for you and has a lot to offer. It can be difficult and can seem like a fish desert some days and an aquarium on other days. Bass, trout, freshwater salmon, Kokanee, crappie and catfish. It has 20” plus chrome trout and salmon that will fight very hard, especially on light tackle. A Scotty Lake troller downrigger helps this time of year when the fish are deep. But in later winter and spring you can troll without downrigger. Napa River and Benicia 9th street are great options for stripers as long as you follow the tide schedules and wind reports.
