I'll be at Lassen this weekend at the Manzanita Lake campground. I am clueless when it comes to trout. According to the website Manzanita fishing is limited to a "lure with a single barbless hook". I don't know how to fly fish, what lure can I use with a rod and reel that fits this?

Butte Lake seems more accommodating as it recommends using spinners, maybe I should just fish there?

Lastly, should I bring the Compass with me or can I rent a boat/kayak there? Maybe fishing from shore is fine?

Any general tips for a clueless trout angler appreciated  :smt001

Update: I found there are watercraft rentals. May still bring the Compass anyways.

If your coming through Redding stop at Ted Fay Fly Shop. They can hook you up with flies you can chuck with a casting bubble on spin gear.

Even if it’s not 100% strictly fly fishing only per regulations, some pretentious fly guys will 100% act as if you’re poaching if you don’t have a fly rod there. Threats of violence, property damage etc. fully legal or not, I don’t suggest using a spinning reel there. It’s gotten worse in recent years i think.

Many fishermen spend their lives chasing fish, only to realize that it was themselves that they were chasing.

The "Salty" in my handle refers to my attitude, not the waters I fish

I did end up trying the single hook barbless spinners and it went great! I had a lot of strikes and 3 trout in the net. I did speak with a few others on the water, all fly fishing but no threats of property damage this time...

When in stock, the camp store does sell the barbless spinners with 20 dollar spinning rods.
