On my last fishing trip I discovered that my nocqua battery was no longer able to fully charge or hold a charge. I had been using their 20ah to power my 9 inch Humminbird FF.

I had been researching higher than 12v batteries for a fishfinder, with some units reportedly performing better at a higher voltage supply. My fishfinder specs say that it can operate up to 20v.

After some researching and shopping around I purchased a Norsk Lithium 14.8v 30ah battery. The size should last me a long weekend of camping and fishing.

I couldn’t find a waterproof box that I liked for the battery. I could only find ones too big or too small. Eventually I stumbled upon a Plano spinnerbait box that was just right! Not fully waterproof, but my plan was to have it mounted in the hull under my seat (Hobie outback) and it would be waterproof until I got like 5 inches of water in the hull. At that point I would have bigger issues than a wet battery!!

I had to trim out the plastic spinnerbait dividers and then add some foam padding (some old packaging I had laying around) for a solid battery fit. I then added a watertight pass thru and wiring to connect to my existing FF wiring.  The battery came with a spade to SAE wiring harness to use with the charger. So I just had to make an SAE to FF wiring connection.

Anyhow so far I am pretty happy with my install. I will report back on the battery once I get a chance to put it through its paces.

Nice and clean - great work!  Love the Plano box. I've been thinking about smaller boxes for my battery setup, and will have to look at Plano now. I'm currently using a .30 cal ammo box, and while it works great, it is definitely bigger and bulkier than I need.

I’m now 2 full fishing days into the new battery (8 hr days) and I’ve only used 1/4 of the power bar. Humminbird helix 9 g4 MSI run at 7/10 brightness.  Super happy with the set up.

Nice setup.

I'm just curious as to the pros of Li-NMC as compared to LiFePo4. I have the latter, and it's lasted forever, no worries of a meltdown, and possibly even cheaper.

Nice setup.

I'm just curious as to the pros of Li-NMC as compared to LiFePo4. I have the latter, and it's lasted forever, no worries of a meltdown, and possibly even cheaper.

I’m probably the least qualified person to speak on this, but I’ll take a stab at it  :smt001

I’ve owned and used both. Traditionally speaking LiFePo4 is a “safer” lithium chemical reaction to yield electrical energy, while other types can be more energy dense.

So in my search for a battery I took into consideration the case size I had to work with, and the output/reserve that I wanted. The one I chose has several safety systems built in that minimize/eliminate the risks associated with LI-NMC. It is IP-67 rated by itself so water shouldn’t be an issue. It also has a BMS system that is able to shut down the battery/disconnect the terminals.

It has a lot of bells and whistles (usb and usb/c charger ports even!) which are realistically overkill for probably many users. That being said I think that the extra capacity in the smaller form factor is really the selling point for me. If it lets me get a 3 day fishing trip in while being able to charge my phone and radio then I am willing to pay the premium price over a LiFePo4 battery.

Phew, that was a really wordy way of saying it has more AH in a smaller/lighter form.

Fun fact, tha plano box fits inside the hobie rectangular hatch drop in bucket, but you have to take the lid off. Nice little three compartment storage.
