thought this might be of interest to you guys.  i fished with my father on the rockcod opener and used live bait from hmb.  we ran down to pescadero and started just south of the 37.15 line.  we picked out way south, looking for marks, and eventually hit the mother lode.  we were in 20 feet of water (oh, so now i have your attention!) between that big house right on the beach and a huge wash rock.  sorry, i was so busy that i didn't get numbers.  we got 15 of these moster blues.  they ran 4-5 pounds, maybe more.  do you guys fish pescadero?

WE WILL NOW :smt002 I know Josh (Promethean SparK) and Ethan hit this spot a lot! I fished it once with Lee a few years back and got some Lings.

That's a BIG blue  :smt007  Congrats!

Thanks for the report!

I think the fish in the picture is a Black rockfish, not a Blue, but a bommer nonetheless.

Cheers

How can you tell? Is it pretty obvious?

Upper jaw hinge.  If it extends only halfway on the eye, it's a blue.  If it extends to the back end of the eye, it's a black.

You can also check the anal fin.  If it's rounded, it's a black.  Blues are more straight or slanted.

A 5# blue would be a monster.  The largest recorded is 21".  The CA record is only 3# 14 ounces.  The CA black rockfish record is 9# 2 ounces.

It's hard to tell from the picture, but I think that's a black.

I'm pretty sure that's a real nice black rockfish.  The white/gray patches near the dorsal fin are pretty characteristic of black rockfish to me.

The commute from the shore is pretty light, though I've been as far out as 70' deep from there.  Those blacks are a good reason to use a teaser hook, you'll get doubles before you drift by the school.  I've seen schools of blacks freediving that had 1-200 fish in them within a 20' circle.  That was suspended just off the side of a 15' pinnacle.  If you can get just out of range of the waves on the wash rocks and fish the edges of them you'll find alot of blues/blacks there.

I too have seen the schools while diving.  The blacks and blues appear to school by size too.  So if you're getting the big ones, chances are there are other big ones around, and visa versa.  There also seems to always be some larger solitary olives hanging around the edges of the schools, so if you like to target those, try dropping in on the edge of the schools instead of right in the middle.

You can launch from the beach.  There's a big rock/island just off the beach, and you can get out from one side or the other depending on where the surf is coming from.  It's kind of hairy, but all the rocks there break up the waves into foam.   Biggest danger is getting flipped by a rock when the surge pulls out.
