After hooking up my trailer today and doing a test run, I can tell the issue is worse than rotors. When I brake all the way to the end of a stop, at the end I hear a good thump from the front end and then it seems like another pop when I start going again.  Feels to me like the calipers are loose and binding up then popping free.  It wasn't noticeable at all like this yesterday without the trailer hooked up.  Looks like I wont make it to Doran, at least not with a trailer.

Can you lift the front tires off the ground place jackstands under the frame so they don't touch the ground?
If so, now take a long lever to everything on the suspension, steering and brakes .
Try and find some slop.
Also grab the tires @6/12 o'clock and try and feel for play.
Have a dead blow hammer?
Beat the calipers side to side.
Do they move?

Tsuri hit the nail on the head.
Again what year is it?

Whoops deleted my post  :smt001

Yeah you need to take off the wheels and drums look at the pads and shoes front and rear you may just be missing a clip or something or have to bleed or replace pistons or calipers.

Toyota's not so expensive, quality parts and easy to work on.

Or you need a New Truck.

And if your first gen Four Runner is not too rusty someone else will buy that and build it into their dream rig.

This was my thought too - sound like could be worn/loose suspension parts.

Aren't you a single, professional, thrifty dude with some $ in the bank?!

I say splurge and get a new rig.  Live with a warranty for a few years.  Spoil yourself!

I don't know shit about rotors, calipers...etc., but it sounds like the NCKA Hive has given you some great info to start troubleshooting.  Reading your post here, I felt like I was on YotaDIY.com or something!

I have a 2017 Chevy 1500 that I've never towed anything with.  V8, and I get around 20 MPG when I drive like grandma and don't have anything on the racks.  My third Chevy double cab in a row - kept the first two 7 years each (around 180K miles).  No major problems until I lost a lifter on this current truck a few years ago at 103K miles.  New engine cost way too much, but it's been great since, and I have about 44K on the replaced engine.

Want to buy a 1500?   :smt003

Some of the newer offerings out there are pretty nice, mpg would be the catch...
I don't want to be towing loads with my crawlers, maybe a bantam @ max tho...

The JahRunner has a body lift right, or leveling kit? May need to replace the CV axel & boots, if that was never done.
You know what I’d say: get you a Ram 1500.

al if you haven't driven your truck for a while,  the tires get kindda flat on one side then after it warms up, itll be smooth again.  it happened to my truck ever so often if i don't drive it for a while.   that being said my truck is up for grabs still if you would like to check it out. 15ish mpg. 2005 tundra 4.7v8 4x4

I have this same truck, except in 2wd. Just turned over 207k and still running smooth. Most reliable and dependent tundra year IMO.

I’m on my 2nd Tacoma (4w/d) .

My first one was killed in an accident when I was t-boned by a drunk driver .

The impact was where the cab and bed meet. The bed was turned to. 90* angle from the cab .

I walked away with some injuries . That truck had 113,000 +- on it (I know 13 right ) . Never had an issue with that truck

My current is 2006 Tacoma with 172,500 +- . I beat the hell out of it and it shows.

I would not hesitate to purchase either one of those again.

Can’t speak to the new generation trucks .

It really boils down to your time and money.

You , from what little I know of you by reading on site and a few messages, come off as intelligent and capable of doing your best in any situation you may find yourself in.

I’m sure if you fix it yourself, buy new or new used , you’ll figure it out.

I must qualify this quote by saying I hate working on vehicles other than adding cool accessories..LOL

I too am on my second tacoma.  I still have my first one(also a 2006 4x4), after a drunk hit it and I found a body shop willing to fix it.  all superficial damage, but costly..and by fixing the tailgate instead of buying a new one as an example it is looking good!!  I have 210,000 miles on it I swear it runs smoother than the new 2023 tacoma.

I should sell "trusty" but I am having the hardest time doing so.  I love that thing.  I use it for my kayak moving, and it just goes and goes.  decent MPG if I am not in a race.

the best Toyota mechanic I know is in Concord CA.  Frank owns "franks import service".  Frank is honest to a fault.  clean and tidy..he retires and I am a worried Toyota owner.r

Another happy Tacoma owner  :smt001. My current one is 150k and going  :smt001. Between all Tacomas I own, I have driven over a million miles!

I have 130k or so on my Ram 1500 and plan on driving it into the ground. Gas mileage sucks though. With the roof racks and 2 kayaks on top plus loaded down with camping and fishing gear I’m getting less than 15mpg at ~75 mph freeway speeds.
