Hello there,
Hope I’m doing this right. I’ve never posted on this type of online forum before.
I’ve been kayak crabbing for a long time but just got my first ocean rod/reel which has yet to be strung. I was told I can’t fish from the shore just after I bought it.  :smt010
I am a 38y/o WFA, I have a 17 year old son. Studied natural sciences in college was hoping to continue with a degree in wildlife from HSU but life took me in another positive direction. Lived up in Mount Shasta alpine area for 8 years until recently moving back to Mendocino county. (Redwood valley/Ukiah)

I learned about this forum from a nice man working at pacific outfitters in Ukiah!
Happy to be a part of the group.

Welcome to the Madness MM!  :smt006

Glad you found our kayak fishing community! There are plenty of us with ancient ocean kayaks  :smt044  And of course you can fish from the shore!  There's plenty of shore based fishing opportunities, so I'm not sure what you were told or what kind of rod setup you purchased is, but I'm sure we can help you put it to good use  :smt003

I’m glad I found it too! More accurately- I was lead to it  :smt003
The nice man at pac outfitters told me I CAN in fact fish from shore at this time. So I’m gunna come back in there and get my rod set up soon. It’s an uglystik I remember that much. Did some research online for a few hours/days before I pulled the trigger.
Can’t wait to get out there!

Welcome aboard MM  :smt006 You are misinformed about fishing from shore.   You can fish from shore all year round if you have a fishing license.

Some more details please on where you were planning on fishing, and the rod has a length and power raiting on it near where the reel seats.  Something like 7-MH-393020 or something like that.

Hi Nicole! I'm just up the hill from you in Willits. I like to fish Lake Mendocino starting in the early spring.
Hit me up if you want to tag along.
Welcome to the community.
If you don't know where you're headed, any road could get you there.

Please see attached photo for all the details I have on the rod.
I will primarily be fishing on the Mendocino coast. Hopefully get up to Humboldt from time to time.

Hi there!
Thank you for the welcome.
Honestly I’ve fished inland fresh water for most of my life and I’m not really a fan. I just want to fish the ocean. I don’t like how the freshwater stuff tastes  :smt003
Definitely down for some salt water fishing tho!
Also I once hiked the back side of lake mendo during the massive fish dieoff… years ago… fish from that lake grosses me out. Although I understand you don’t HAVE to eat them, when I’m fishing it’s for eating purposes ideally  :smt001

My sister is in Redwood Valley. I think it's about an hour to Albion or Russian Gulch from there.
