Perfect rod has been made and sold for a while
UGLY Stick
Just pick the one to meet individual needs
They have a good selection and can set up separate rods for each different fish you are targeting

7' Trevala like proportions and characteristics in ML, long butt, cork grip with bomber guides would be nice.

Perhaps up the action a little, needs to be light and durable.

TwoThree rods is the perfect number  :smt003  One Jigging Rod for rockfish with a good backbone to wrestle fish away from their hidey holes and on to my dinner plate.  Another for dift/trolling for Halibut, rockfish, soles/dabs that is longer and more limber.  A third rod for Salmon that is bigger for trolling 12oz or more or those big divers.

My Trevala's have stood the test of time, but I have recently switched to Ray's Fishing rods last couple years my Trevals have been gathering dust.

One thing I've really come to appreciate this past year fishing with Team USA is that we sort of live in a bubble here in CA in terms of what is considered suitable fishing rods.  We tend to use shorter, heavier and faster action rods.  And we use conventionals, when the rest of the world is using spinning. So my advice is that you need to come up with a lineup of rods.

And the rest of you need to size down, go longer, slow your action, and flip your rod over.  Don't judge, just try it.

I just started using a spinner in the salt for RF/lings this year and did well with it. Running 20lb braid and leader. I actually want to go down in rod size with that set up. It’s rated 12-25 and fishes like a 20 and I want to fish more like a 15.

But yeah, light spinners in the salt are a blast. And if you get snagged I find it easier to grab the spool and break off (at 20lb) than a baitcaster and you don’t have to mess with your drag settings.

So you guys are saying I need to get some new and different rods even though the Trevala has been working fine for the last ten years or so? I can see a positive side to that, I get to get some new gear!

Your right in that I consider spinning gear for fresh water or shore fishing but recognize that is because thats a local trend.

I couldn’t agree more. I started using a light jigging rod matched with an old Penn Slammer 2500. It’s a blast! You feel all the fight of the fish and really learn to work your gear.

I agree that we definitely have a bubble here.  I think maybe because a lot of our fisheries are heavily biased toward trolling or jigging, which are more easily accomplished with conventional gear.

That said, a spinning rod in saltwater is pretty fun, especially in shallow nearshore water.  I have the 8'3" Ugly Stik Bigwater in Medium Light with a bait runner reel - very versatile setup.  Easy to cast anything from about 1/2oz to 3 oz and can get some serious distance with 20lb braid.  Very sensitive tip, and also a lot of backbone.  Also works great for sabiki rigs.

There are also a lot of other very appealing aspects of a spinning reel.  Both the rods and reels tend to cost a little less than their conventional counterparts, they are easier to maintain, easier to use and cast for a new angler, and most can be swapped left/right hand in a matter of seconds.  The only big downfall I have is they kinda suck for trolling, but there are almost always options other than trolling...

Spinning reels drop faster and with lighter weight, but they aren't as easy to deploy for trolling.
