I feel like I was on the moon; it’s been a while since I posted. Anyways - I was driving the other day and listening on the radio came across this amazing rescue mission, by an off duty coast guard member.

Looks like a group of kayakers went out and saw that conditions were bad, so they returned, but then realized one was missing. The missing teen lost his paddle and was found 12 hours later (4am) in the water hanging on to his kayak. Hypothermia, dehydration, but he’s alive.

Lessons:
- if you go in a group, watch each other
- leash thy paddle
- carry a VHF or anything for communication plus backup
Luck favors the prepared

Awesome rescue!

- leash thy paddle

I learned this one the hard way one time. Had my paddled clipped onto the side of my hull, and some chop started to build. I didn't even notice that a wave had detached my paddle from it's clip until I was almost back to the beach.  I backtracked and searched for maybe 20 minutes before I heard another kayaker on the radio say they found a paddle. Pretty lucky someone found it - didn't want to try a beach landing without it.

Maybe 10 years ago a guy rented a kayak there and paddled out and realized that no matter how hard he paddled the island was getting smaller and smaller…

Four days later he was picked up somewhere in the pacific very sunburned

Impression from the article was head to toe blisters. The post rescue interview was a very funny read. He rediscovered religion and made all the usual promises to god

If youve dealt with the currents there it’s no joke It’s amazing that you can rent a kayak there at all
