What's the odd to catch a Great White from shore?

Exactly.  Seems speculative to claim that these guys were targeting GWS.  Threshers are certainly sought after and coveted for their meat and their fight, and that gear is specifically known to aid in retaining one that's hooked.  Thinking that you're going to hook and land a GWS on any shore-based gear isn't common or even a thing, for the most part.

I was impressed with how they handled the shark, and, yeah, that guy was close to the chompers!  20,000 pounds per square inch is no joke.

I'd say pretty good if you know where to go. Santa Cruz is known for its small GWS population, so with a well-placed bait and the right gear, one could reasonably expect to hook into one.

I would say that it's pretty good if you wanted to try in a couple spots in Aptos

IMO, it is not proven that he intentionally targeting the GW.  I tend to give people benefit of the doubts before making judgment.  The way he took great care to release the shark made me think otherwise.

I’m not trying to be contentious Sonny, this just doesn’t pass the sniff test. I can’t say with any certainty what the odds are but so far this guy looks like he’s batting a thousand on great whites.

I just find it unconvincing that this dude went to “Shark Park” , (so named for the population of gws that hang out on the beach in that stretch) where there’s consistent gws sightings, continual drone footage of multiple gws’s in the Surfline, and frequent PSA’s about confirmed gws at every beach entry point…..and they show up with such regularity that charter boats offer gws viewing trips…… and he came prepared to do battle with a gws , complete with a rod and reel that’s excessively overkill to target threshers, leopards or smoothounds, with an equally overkill harness and fighting belt to land a thresher, leopard or smoothound.

It’s like dropping a diamond jig on the edge of a reef during a rockfish closure and suggesting that you’re fishing for halibut. Your odds of landing the “targeted species” are slim and the likelihood for catching prohibited species is high.

I’m not against shark fishing and I don’t have any problems with people targeting them for catch and release or eat.  I’d  feel differently if this guy was fishing with an outfit that would be more customary for the intended target, nothing he had was common for even threshers.

With more information my mind may even be changed….what was he using for bait, how did he deploy his bait (reels that size aren’t known for being great casters), what sized was the braid on the reel?  How many threshers has he caught in the surf? What exactly drew him to this particular area to target them?

Until that info is out there…..I don’t think this was above board.

I agree that it looks like they were targeting great whites. In Florida shore-based shark fishing for large sharks (Tigers, Hammerheads) is a thing. The chosen bait would be the proof. Although whites that size will still eat fish (as evidenced by the one that swiped at my stringer), you would use a larger fish than a thresher would typically target.

In the first 20 seconds I believe he says that "he droned out his bait" meaning deployed it with a drone, right?

Pretty interesting the user who posted the video has no affiliation with the fisherman, let alone doesn’t have full knowledge of what occurred prior to his arrival.
He happened to walk by when dude was reeling in the shark. He’s  getting his YouTube profile blown up with views that isn’t his own personal content. I’m curious if he had consent to film and display the other fisherman publicly.
A lot of not quite right going on in this video.

I'd say it's 100% the youtuber's content since he filmed it... Don't think you need consent to film someone in public.

When you target them?  Pretty good, I'd imagine.  Especially if you're dropping your bait from a drone where you can basically sight-fish them.

Does he need consent?  It's in public.

“Under current law, using drones for hunting or fishing is illegal, ” said Chief Henry Gonzales Jr. of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.”

Does the law specify bait delivery or sight fishing? Is it meant to cover both? I've seen guys on the rocks at Pacifica using drones for bait delivery.
