Non-Motorized Vessel Petition: Denied at 2024 08 14 FGC Meeting

Our petition was denied, but we made some progress…
Thank you to the workgroup members, speakers, and many supporters.
The petition workgroup is dissolved.

Achievements:
· Let CDFW and FGC know that kayak angler community exist
· Participated in developing 20FM and 2024 Groundfish Regulation to get a 6-month nearshore season
· Joint effort between NCKA and Fresh & Salty group

Failure & Improvement Needed:
· Not able to mobilize adequate participants.
· Need a more focused and structured group.
· Need better organizers and speakers.

Near-term issues:
· MPA expansion petitions (23 pending petitions)
· California 30x30 Initiative
· Quillback rockfish survey

Recommendations:
· Start a Coastal Conservation Association of California (CCA CAL) chapter focusing on kayak anglers. https://ccacalifornia.org/
· Or start a non-profit organization to protect kayak anglers.

However, Samantha was quick to jump in that the memo also said something like, "The March recommendation was made with the sportfishing community INCLUDING the kayak committee.  Must continue to recognize the impact on quillback."

What are your recommendations to address these deficiencies?
