Tough day fishing yesterday. Water temp around 54F, not much wind, flat water near pier. Launched out of coast guard pier in monterey around 630am, headed north along del monte beach to apartments searching for halis. Swell definitely got taller further north we went, probably around 4-6 ft at some points along apartments. Good activity on finder on way out, but nothing biting. I was on jigs and hoochies with squid strips, buddy using swim baits. Tiny little octopus ended up coming along for ride on my jig, gave him a bit of squid for his troubles and he munched on it for a bit then left through a scupper hole. Found 2 bait balls, got our hands on 1 sardine, 1 smaller mack and 1 fat keeper mack around 730am, put them on live bait rigs and paddled around to stay warm, nothing bit. Decided to turn back in around 10am, hooked up on one blue one copper on way back in. DFG biologist was at dock, told us other kayakers had similar days.

Planning on heading up to santa cruz this saturday the 17th, maybe new brighton for halibut if the surf cooperates.

I had a similar slow day there last week. That mackerel sure is nice though.

It was slow fishing for me on the west side of Santa Cruz (and further up the coast) yesterday too. Similar story with the unusually cold water temps. There was almost solid bait from the harbor to Natural Bridges, with an impressive whale show (although a bit too close for comfort) just off of Natural Bridges in 45 fow.
I don't like stuff that sucks.
