BH 2007/09/30

Sounds like a fun day on the water. WTG guys

  Jim & I were the early birds to the parking area.  OTW by 7am, I think the launch was the calmest I've seen it this year, which was a little strange because once we were outside the swell was quite noticeable.  Initially the drift was straight offshore, and I managed a steady pick of assorted rockfish and two barely legal lings on a squid tipped jig. I ended up keeping two decent vermilions at about 18" each. No halibut were interested.
  The wind changed direction around 9:30am and the bite seemed to cool off. The tide also began flooding, so maybe that had an effect? Anyway, we fished a lot of ground until 1pm. Sorry to miss the yakfisher social and mandogs on the grill, but Jim had a long drive and I had major WAF building to do. Fortunately the La Cabana burrito feast & frosty newcastles helped quite a bit in this regard  .
  A gorgeous sunny day to be out there at the always different and adventurous Bean, on the water for the final day of RF season at our special NorCal spot. Now the trophy lings & rockies have all winter to work out, fatten up & get ready for us in 2008.
A big thank you goes out to the BH "regulars" Mooch, da Fishunter, Eric B, Pacifico, Ramon, Sail Fisk, Freddie, Bajareefer, Gordo, Jmairey and well, all the rest of you I've been fortunate to meet & fish with at Bean. Let's do it again next year (Geez, is this a yearbook signing or what?)

If I'd know you guys had to bail I would have come down to say hi instead of hollering down the hill, Sean!  Sorry about that.

It was a fun day all in all, and like usual I learned something new, (how to filet a cab- thanks Craig).

But the real reason for my second post in this thread is to echo Piscean and say BIG THANKS to everyone here.  I learned so much from all of you at BH this season it's ridiculous. 

Nice stringers- way to slay 'em! Last time I was there I scoped the shore for depth and found a great spot to fish from shore...

you guys stuck to the plan and were rewarded with good, fishable conditions for the ENDER.(forcast sounded worse that it was/looked) those clips look nice and full in not FAT too!  
I was glad to hit it weds and was thinkin bout yous guys "all weekend" (fishing that is)
I 'm glad to have made to list of "regulars" and i will miss it like no other spot til I find a better or the 08' season comes around again.(too easy to catch them "dumb" rockfish)

...i was eating microwaveable mini-tacos for lunch yesterday, while dreaming of "mooch-dogs, aprons and the smell of octopus on my fingers" kickin-it on the beach wit da' fellas.

Yup the Hollow was very kind to many of us over the years...well maybe not for Shark Attack Dan (Dan 964)  ...but he did survive the ordeal so I think it's still "positive" in a way

Negative on that....J mooched SIX hotdogs    It's all good though......he only likes to hang out with me only when I have something to offer 

C'mon mooch, your good looks and stellar personality are good enough for me,  .
But a few dogs, a packet of GULP, and a nice grapefruit soda are always welcome,   .

Necky for sure. I'm thinking it's a Spike, as it doesn't look to be nearly 15', but it could be a Dolphin.

At any rate, Neckys will surf as well as any general purpose SOT out there, so I'm thinking the paddler violated rule #1 of surf zone landings - Don't stop paddling until you're on the beach. And he also has the paddle on the wrong side of the boat. Time for some surf zone practice ??

Nice pics and a great BH ending for 2007.  Sorry I couldn't make it out there for the festivities...I was with you guys in spirit.  The WAF would have suffered greatly (wedding anniversary).  Yeah, yuck it up Mooch!

For you BH newbs, about this time last year CafeCraig was buzzed by a GWS.  No offense Craig but one look at you and the GWS thought you were a underling and probably wanted to give you another year to fatten up...LOL.

Compared to last year the surf has almost been nonexistent regarding yak eating waves.  Last year my heartbeat would go up when I would see/hear the big boomers when we would bring out yaks down from the highway and this year it was almost laughable.  I can almost hear the newbs saying, "what waves?  You guys are a bunch of sissies". 

Anyway, another good nonevent is that we didn't need any coast guard or harbor patrol rescues.  Getting a ride from the rangers doesn't count.

The halibut showed up big time this year or maybe we spent more time fishing for them...I'm not sure what did it. 

Mooch, props on setting up the BBQs!  L&L is good grub but it forces us east bay guys to drive over the bay bridge and deal with the parking lot they call a freeway.

Congrats to everybody that landed fish at the Bean.  Some stringers were big, some weren't but we all made it home safely and had some fish tacos/dinners to show for it.  Personally, my relatives, friends and coworkers enjoyed my harvest from the sea as well and they certainly all appreciate fresh fish.  Good to see and meet everyone this year and I look forward to next year's BH adventures.

WTG John Craig and others. Bet the landlord is going to miss all the company on the water. Spent the day cleaning carpets to improve my WAF for BAM and the Islander but really wanted to be on the ocean. May not have a fresh ling but clean carpets are good too.

Sean pretty much said it all for me.  Bean Hollow rocks!  I caught a bunch of rockfish that I released.  I was really trying for a halibut.  I used a dropper loop set-up with squid, a white "superman" iron with squid, a chrome/blue iron with squid, and some various swim baits tipped with squid, all which have done good for halibut where I usually fish in the SB/Channel Islands area.  I fished from 40 to 75 feet.
The swell seemed kind of strange.  Very calm in the Bean Hollow bay, but a pretty good swell and bump outside.  Outside I got a couple of whitecaps in my lap while I drifted.  Must have been the direction of the swell.
It was fun fishing with Sean and the rest of you.  And....thanks to Sean & Laura for putting me up for the night and providing excellent food and, of course, drinks.  (You're spoiling me for Tanguery gin!)  AND WE STILL MADE IT TO THE BEACH BEFORE ANYONE ELSE!
