Oneil Forebay 9/30

Hit the Forebay at first light.  Frankfishing joined as well.  Halfway to the buoys and I see stripers boiling.  Turned the paddles on and got there in short order.  Today was a fly rod day for me to get some BAM practice in, first time for me doing this on stripers.  My first cast landed in the middle of a boil and I'm hooked up immediate on a small shad fly.  One dink striper down.  Over the course of the next hour I CNR'd 14 more dinks in the 12-16" range.  Where are the big girls?  Then the fish went down and it was all over.  Over the next 4 hours I managed 4 more on the troll, 2 on the trolled fly and 2 on the secret orange/black Smithwick stickbait.  Also got a small largemouth.

Frank missed the busting fish but managed a few later in the day.  Nice to finally meet you in person Frank.  Sorry that my VHF chose today to go on the fritz.

Nice report, my son works for DWR and is on the crew that runs the weed cutting boat. He gets a kicks of sending me pics in the middle of the day/week of the forbay.

I wish I had a 5 wt and floating line, but alas, I was using a 9 wt with T14 shooting head ... a little overkill on the little guys.  But hey, I got some good casting practice in.  Now if I could just extend my cast a little further ...

Craigh, do they have a schedule on the weed cutting?  I've been there before, on what must have been the day after cutting.  It's not fun with all the cut weeds floating around.  Today was nice, flat calm, and no floating weeds.

Nice work polepole, I knew I should have bailed out on the house work and hit the forebay. This time of year it is really primo. Even if they are small, getting them on a light setup is a blast.

I'll have to ask him, I don't think the cutting schedule is written is stone.  I'll get back with you on that one...

Pole - Very nice pic! Sometimes it's really hard to stop fishin and fiddle with the camera - like when there's a BOIL ON! And it's STILL DARK! Good job! There's nothin quite like the  GRAB  on a fly! Even with the dinks, who can still put a big Bendo in that 9wt!  Tom

Yeah I know.  I have been trying to concentrate on taking more pictures ... lest Mooch gives me a bad time.  Still, this is the only picture I took during the morning blitz as I didn't want to waste any more time ...
