Monterey 9/29

Met up with Fish Flogger at 7:30 and unloaded my gear. We launched into mini waves at San Carlos Beach and made our way out towards the red bouy to meet up with sackyak and e2g.

We ran into SCallen and fished with his crew for a bit. We were getting a consistent bite from an assortment of rockies just outside the kelp. Then we paddled out toward the red bouy and tried to locate a reef  that I had in my GPS. We eventually found some structure and a school of fish. Although, it wasn't right on the spots I marked last month. Maybe lasat time I was just over a school of fish instead of bottom structure..?

I pulled up a nice little ling on a white 6" scampi w/red 4oz leadhead but it was only about 21 inches so back he went. He fought really hard though, so that was cool. Then I pulled up a big copper and really got my blood flowing...thinking it was gonna be a good day. But it wasn't all that great. We had trouble staying on top of the reef, despite the zero wind and slow drift; they were going in opposite directions so it was kinda weird. Plus, we had a small boat w/four guys pull up on our spot WTF! It made me wonder if they were listening to us on the radio.

I ended the day with 10 or 11 fish. Only a couple were worth keeping but I let em all go...except 3 dabs that I planned to use as bait. Never ended up using them so I brought them home. Flogger got a big ocean whitefish. Sackyak got a big copper. E2G got some good fish. So all in all it was a good day. The WX was awesome. Although sackyak did say that it was windy earlier, like at 6:30-7 (see, another reason to arrive late LOL).

Unfortunately I don't have any pics to post because I have been using a disposable h2O proof camera, and I still have 8 pics left before developing them. D'OH! Shoulda took more pics.

It was great fishing with you guys! Hopefully next time we have the same WX but better catching!

That was a really great time on the water with you guys. I hope that sackyak will post some of the pics he took. I think e2g got a few pics too.

After spending the entire day following the guy with the fish finder (Sin Coast) I'm gonna have to get my own this week. Think I'm gonna go with the Eagle 245DS. Dual beam and the price is right at just around $100. If anybody has any better suggestions in that price range let me know.

The jelly fish were going off on Saturday. I've never seen so many jellies in the water. CARAZY!!

Nice report, it sounds like you guys had fun out there!     I was stuck at school...the quarter has started and I'm teaching every Saturday morning through December.    Glad you guys had some luck though!

nice fishing with you all.  Too bad the fish were not as plentiful as the divers!  There must have been an event or something going on.

for me mostly small rockfish, a few larger ones for tacos and bonus for that area is loading up on sanddabs.

Yes, you're right. No fishing inside the bouys.

And they mean business. I've never been bugged by the DFG but they stopped us and asked for licenses and checked our catches. If they saw you fishing inside the reserve they'd probably string you up.

Yeah, I knew there was a reserve out there I just wasn't sure where it was at so I didn't take any gear with me.  Thanks for the heads up.

That was a vermillion not a copper 22 inches and about 10 lbs the really sad part of it is that she was full of eggs    oh well after and although I regretted that, at least she tasted good.  I need to remember that about the really big ones and let them go after the photo op.  Anyway I ended up with a nice stringer and the DFG guy was nice and friendly.  He told me that most of the kayak fishermen he speaks to have their....stuff together.

also be sure to know the boundaries to the lovers point MPA as it comes out much farther than I would have thought.

Where is lover's point?  I'm pretty clueless to the South of Moss hangouts.  There was a nice dive map at one of the scuba shops, I think I'll be picking one up.
