I want to take my Revo 16 on my Honda Odyssey, and need advice on how to load it.
I’m worried that if I lean the kayak on the plastic spoiler at the top of the tailgate, then the spoiler will break.

Another thing is that when the tailgate opens, it’ll probably hit the kayak. Not sure if there’s anything that can be done about that. Just be careful not to open it when the kayak is on.

Use the pool noodle to raise the kayak.

Don't slide it on the spoiler!

Get some roof rails and crossbars with or without cradles, drape a moving blanket over the rails and load from the side by placing the bow (or stern if you have a rudder) up on the blanket on the rail then walk back to the other end of the kayak lift that and then slide/rotate the craft into the cradles or final position upside down. If done right it's a great way to save your back however with the height of your vehicle you might need a small step ladder for the final steps.

Having your kayak in cradles upright is kind of a pain to tie down because of the height but would allow your hatch to open more.

On one of my past vehicles with an automatic hatch lift I was able to turn it off  so I could open manually. Worth checking the owners manual to see if that’s an option with the Odyssey.

I added a Yakima Showboat to my roof rack. Been working great for the last 5 years.

I use a Rhino tack T loader and it makes loading on my CRV easy. I can even easily avoid my antenna on top.

I started with the YAKIMA ShowBoat and upgraded to the Thule Hullavator to carry Hobie Oasis on our Subaru Outback.  Thule Hullavator cost much more, but I felt it provided a much safer option to load and carry our heavy kayaks.  Subaru Outback's rear hatch door closes automatically when it detects the kayak, but if I resist it from closing, it stays open.  I plan to make a video comparing these two options soon.

Regarding the lift gate... The lift gate on my CX-5 will hit the kayak when it's loaded, but the motor detects the resistance and stops it.  Of course, I always forget to do something and have a need to open the lift gate immediately after strapping down the kayak.  I just open it partially and crawl under it to get inside  :smt044

Thanks y’all. Good advice here as usual.
I will give the Codinter device a try since it’s the simplest option. My Odyssey doesn’t have rails or hatch, so first order of business would be to install the rails and crossbars.
I’ll report when I make progress

I've tried those, it doesnt stay on all time and will slip when you put weight on it.

I tried something similar and the kayak slipped off unless it was perfectly balanced and pushed. I set it right back.

my wife made a PVC "L" that is about 2 feet wide and sits on our Honda Fit tailgate (which is almost exactly like a mini Odessey). We added pool noodles as padding. we use the loading straps to attach it (temporary) to the roof rack and then use it as a load assister. I don't have a picture, but I found a similar one on the internet. Just imagine the long part of the L on the top of the car and the small part of the L on the rear window, then put the kayak on the corner of the L

I was wondering how long it would be before a DIY PVC solution appears  :smt044
But yeah - that’s the most solid design.

As for the Codinter, I had one in the past, and indeed the kayak either gets out of alignment or the suction cups come off. But both can be avoided with practice and a clean surface

I cartop on a minivan with a rear spoiler and I agree with all of the above.

There are many YouTube videos on solo cartopping a kayak from the side of the vehicle. You just need a basic roof rack (a pair of cross bars), straps and a moving blanket or even an old bathmat. A step stool is also helpful (even the little plastic kind that looks like an upside down box)
