Question: What’s an example of how CDFW engages diverse groups in the state of California?

Answer: In 2022, CDFW created a Deputy Director position overseeing Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (JEDI) to help the department better understand the cultural needs of different population groups living in California. It’s also a CDFW goal to have our workforce better reflect California’s diversity. Meaningful engagement with communities is an essential part of building trust and relationships with diverse groups across California.

One example was a CDFW outreach event led in Spanish and English at the popular 1,700-acre Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve in Monterey County, which is owned and managed by CDFW and operated in partnership with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Elkhorn Slough Foundation. Celebrating the 2023 Latino Heritage Month in September, the JEDI office with support from Latino Outdoors held an open house at the reserve, featuring a day of family friendly events including a nature walk and bird viewing. Many who attended the event were from the surrounding communities like Pajaro, Castroville and Watsonville, which have large percentages of Spanish-speaking households.

In 2024, CDFW will be celebrating Black History Month in February, Women’s History Month in April, Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in May, Pride Month in June, Latino Heritage Month in September, Filipino Heritage Month and Native American Heritage Month in October.

Perhaps we should get feedback from the JEDI director whether kayak anglers fall under JEDI initiatives.

The F&G Commission hired a consulting firm to train staff, and commissioners on JEDI. I watched their presentation, and listened to the public comments. The commenters stated that only 5% of the general public hunt, or fish. So to them JEDI meant that the commission members should reflect the general public and be 95% non-hunters, or fishers.

This whole thing so smacks of foundations’ involvement

It has the makings of a nice winter thread; I'll bite: In the English-speaking world, isn't every month Anglo History month?

Hopefully we'll be forced to learn one of the languages that determine our ethnicity.  If one doesn't, by a certain year, according to our drivers license, fines will ensue...I'm obligated to choose the non anglo language if applicable.  German would not be eligible.  Filipino would qualify...

FORCED is not good ..encouraged maybe ?

I might be biased as some or many of my Paternal ancestors in Ireland were forced to learn the Queens English;..  ( as in  Victoria) instead of speaking their native language of Irish Gaelic  or as it was referred to the "Irish" 

As far as ethnicity  on the Maternal side  , although they all come from Italy  ,my elders never referred to themselves as Italians but Genoese , since when some of the GGFs  and GGMs were born or lived when Italy wasnt even a country .

Italian was not their native language , Zeneise or Zeneize was/is what they spoke  , a dialect around Genoa and in some other parts of Liguria

I also don`t consider my self Anglo  ..

Yeah buddy…there is some Arab in Sicilian due to proximity to Africa.  I know not much about ethnic migration of Europe.  I just know that Ron Swanson has a certain dislike of all things European.  Anglo is an interesting term as I prolly don’t consider myself that either.  I got plenty of water for ya’.  It’s all collecting on my yaks, car topped style…
