Cypress Point 9/23/07

This is my first post, even though I have been reading NCKA post for the better part of a year. On Sunday, my fishing partner Joe (NCKA Hermit) and I headed for Cypress Point, Pebble Beach. I have no yak of my own, but Joe is kind enough to lend me his wifes prowler 13/angler. Anyway, when we arrived at Cypress Point, there were two other yakers there (Jim and Chris). They were checking out the ingress/egress which can be challenging on a calm day. Today would definately guarantee an adrenalin rush, because there were some huge roller waves to get past and a side wash, which was created from the roller waves crashing on the nearby rocks. Joe convinced me that it was do able. Why I listent to this crazy is beyond me, but I agreed to give it a try. Anyway, we all took off like a pack of scaled dogs and safely made our way to the open ocean. Fishing was some what slow, but enough action to beat off boredom. I hooked up a 22" underling/relaesed of course, caught lots of rock fish under 12 inches/released.  Joe nailed a just legal ling, which made me determined to catch one too. He always seems to out fish me. We started coming into schools of large blues and decided to keep a few. I managed to get my lure through the blue school and WHAM!!! A nice 27" ling decided to take a break from feeding on the blues and took a taste of my Mega bait. His loss, my gain and dinner. The ride back to shore was a thrill, with a huge roller wave giving us a last minute push. The other two yakers (Jim & Chris) came in right behind us. Much to our surprise, they told us they were fishing for blues all day. Since Joe and I had   ling dinners on our stringers, we gave them all but a couple of our blues. It was a great way to end the saltwater season. After all, it's not just about catching fish. It's being able to get your line wet.  LOL!!!

END of the saltwater season? We get to fish until November 30 for rockfish. And October is usually some of the best weather in Monterey!

It was a great day on the water with Ed.  Once you got beyond the breakers there were gentle swells and no wind.  All that was needed was an adventurous spirit.  The furbags didn't bother us too much, just enough to let us know they were around.  Got a keeper ling and a few blues and sacrificed a Gibbs minnow and a megabait to the rock gods.  I have to keep them sated, but the Gibbs was my favorite.  I knew Ed would have to let everyone know he got the biggest ling.  Oh well, it doesn't happen all that often, guess I'll just tip my cap to him.  Didn't the DFG close rock fishing season on Oct 1, or am I mistaken.  Thought I read it somewhere on this site.  Here are a few more pics.

Rockfish season closes October 1st north of Pigeon Pt (which is north of Santa Cruz). It closes Nov 30 for the rest of us, south of Pigeon Pt.

I think its pretty cool that you guys have been launching from a different spot than most people on here know about...its always good to have alternates. Because it sounds like you've been fishing the same area that 5 of us tried to access a few weeks ago, albiet from a different launch site...Asilomar beach. And, well, that trip ended horribly with many crash landings and lost gear. And, plus, launching where you guys have been launching is better because you don't have to paddle through the new Asilomar SMR to get to the fishing grounds. The less paddling the better, in my book!

  after seeing that wave, I would have tucked tail,loaded-up the yak, grab my wave riding vehicle and then swam straight to it! ...so i say from here.

Thanks for the correction about the closing Sin Coast, I'm sure glad I was wrong.  I've been depressed about it for a week.  It's a much easier launch than over at Asilomar, and it's only a five minute paddle to the fishing grounds.  It can be a little tricky getting in and out because of the swells, they can come from more than one direction.  If you keep your head up and stay well away from the rocks you are usually OK.  But it's always best to be safe rather than sorry, our backup launch on the rough days is Stillwater.  Hopefully we'll see you out there soon.
