I don't know. My understanding is you can't target rock fish even if you let them all go. This guys is obviously targeting rf with specific gear. I reported his ass to CalTip. Hope I didn't wrongfully accused him.

I went to his you tube video page.

Someone asked what he was targeting?

His response was Halibut. Totally legal !

I may have missed it but did he mention he was targeting rockfish ?

I always use 8” swim baits on 3oz lead heads and jig 4oz irons for calihali.  Nothing to see here.

Somebody needs to tell him the regs:

While anchoring, drifting, or transiting through an area closed to
take and/or possession of these groundfish species or species groups, no gear may be deployed other than for the take of crustaceans with hoop nets, Dungeness crab traps, and dip nets (§29.80(b), §29.80(c), §28.80).

Isn't that with shelf rock fish on board?

Looks like he took down the video. I have a recording of it. He could deny all he wants. Using rockfish jig on the Little Pedro reef area is obviously targeting rf. He had crabbed and fished there before. He knew what he was doing.

Totally agree. I think he mentioned he was fishing for rockfish in the video too.

I wonder if that was some kind of stunt to get more views/traffic on his channel?  Seems pretty widely known that near shore rockfish closed some whole ago, and I am sure he knew that.

I posted a snippet of the original video for CalTip. He had never mentioned he was targeting Halibut in the original video.

I'm not really trying to get him busted. The problem is, he posted that video and only got praises in the comments. No one pointed it out that he can't be targeting rf in that area at this time. They just wanted to know where to catch rf. Someone may try to repeat his success and get in trouble.

Welp !

Doesn't look like he was on the right track !

Too bad. Guy has great gear and safety equipment.

You think he would be better versed in regulations.

I watched another video of his and he didn't seem too knowledgeable in rockfish species. His friend speared a beautiful Olive and he thought it was a perch.

…..I find it more cringey that he put a spinning reel on a trigger gripped casting rod and fished it upside down.

Run that combo all the time. Works great. Never had an issue bringing in halibut with it in the summer. Guess I’m just poor or just don’t care. You can use a chefs knife to cut butter.  :smt002
