Has anybody discussed this petition with members of other user groups, like private boaters or the CPFV community? I may be wrong, but I assume certain groups will not like the idea.

I posted on Coastside, and the comments were mostly positive with two that were negative. Since early on the overall consensus  in the discussions was that kayakers really got shafted with the new regulations.

Why would they?

Human nature. People generally don’t like it when other people (not them) have nicer things or better opportunities.
I sort of like the idea of a kayak/non-motorized designation being added to the regs; like they did for spearfishermen in ~2010. If anything, the regs for this category would be more liberal with longer seasons. And that sounds good to me! It would certainly lead to more kayak sales & kayak anglers. Maybe if that was conveyed to some of the kayak manufacturers, they would be interested in lending support… 
I just don’t think the commission will make such an exception based on this specific situation/petition. Nevermind that I’ve only caught 5 or 6 quillbacks in the last 18yrs. From their perspective, we’re essentially saying that we will only “take” a few dozen quillbacks because we’re in kayaks and can’t go as far & there’s less of us (less effort hours). They are managing the species for 0 take right now. I’m not trying to be a dick. Just trying to look at it from their perspective.

We have submitted the final version of the petition this morning.  Thank you to all the people who participated in the process and supported.
Our next step is to get ready for the October 11, 2023, San Jose Fish and Game Commission Meeting.  We will provide details in a separate forum heading.

Nuts to see ling and rf limits for 20 people in a day.  Clearly this is where the pressure is coming from.  Thank you for all the work being put into this petition.
