Everything looked like ideal fall conditions this AM, but there was ZERO topwater.  Metered some suspended fish and started "draggin fly" on the 8 wt.  After about 15 minutes it got SLAMMED but did not stick.  Thought it broke off.  Checked the fly and it was still there.  Examined the fly to discover the dullest hook on earth  :smt013 Tried sharpening it and it turns out this hook "sharp proof".   :smt013 :smt013 Today's painful lesson...expensive fly does not equal quality hook.  Might have to learn to roll my own.

Fished a while longer for nada.  Off at 1115.

Hmmm, you try a diamond file? They can hone the hardest of hooks. I just use the diamond nail files. I always file mine in a diamond shape like the owner hooks. Gets em fingernail sticky sharp. I'm surprized there was no top water with all the overcast. You'd think that would have been a bonanza.

Sean -

The drag setting is kind of tricky when trolling flies. The length and relative flexibility of the rod can result in slower loading and hookset. Usually less of a problem with trout but I can imagine with stripers it could be challenging. BTW, what depth were the fish suspended at? Thanks for the intel.

The fish were between 15 and 25 feet down.  While the drag might be tricky, the rod was LOADED and any decent hook would have been burried.  Shopping for sharp flies later this week.

Definitely will be rolling my own as well. Over the weekend I got a snag pulled hard and the hook bent. Pretty crazy since I was only running a 15# line. But bent the hook back a little and kept fishing. Got a solid hit (possibly a solid snag) and the hook broke! :smt011 WTF!! Will be making sure this won't happen again.

I was dragging some hard bait around this morning. Nothing seemed to turn the striper on. I hooked a nice 15in smallie, but that was it. No boils. No love. No work. No worries!

CHEERS!

P.S. Andy.....see a therapist!...not the rapist.
