Shimmy lands another one! Shimmy, Sean and I went to Tomalas Bay yesterday in search of some halibut action. We made bait fairly quickly and started the slow drift for halibut. The weather was perfect, not wind, slow tide, sun. Shimmy ended up with a nice hook-up and landed his halibut.

About 11:05 Sean asked for a time check and said, "I'm on Mountain Time", and opened a beer. About 5 minutes later the wind picked up to about 20 MPH. It turned sucky fast!

We got off the water about noonish and headed for the barn. If you're counting, that Zero for Five for me  :smt013

CHEERS!

North Sonoma/Mendo Crew kickin' butts.  Ok Dan, if you and I could actually land one, it would be more fun.  Nice fish Shimmy!!

Note to everyone...If Tomales is handing you a nice day, don't celebrate with a beer!!! It really went from a mirror to a MESS in minutes.

That was the most un-characteristic Tomales weather until 11. I was actually doing a slow troll because there was no  drift. Then the wind blew the opposite way for a bit. The water was murky with lots of Eelgrass floating around interspersed with jellyfish.
I had been fishing the area we had previous good luck in for zippo, so I decided to move off. It was so calm I could see bait dimples on the surface. So I had trolled into them and got out my sabiki rod and dropped in to hook a small Chovie then a Jackie. My Sabiki was still in the water when I got picked up. My rod was propped on my leg to troll when I felt the rap-tap and line started rolling off. I picked up and freespooled while tightening up the drag a bit. I increased thumb pressure when the Hali started peeling out. I locked her up and the fish set itself as it started to run and tow me around. It wasn't a very big fish but it gave it's all in the fight. It came up to the boat and I could see it was the right kind. I gaffed her on the second drive by and slipped in the waiting game clip. After a short bed time story I slipped her into the padded fish bed (bag). :smt003 She taped out at 27" small but sweet.
Too bad there wasn't more action! But then they wouldn't be "Devilfish!" :smt077 :smt093 :smt096

The ramp is still closed at Nick's Cove, so boats have to launch elsewhere. I think only one or two boats came by us. I only saw one that looked like he did a couple short drifts by us.
