I got a new Penn Fathom 40 (for no good reason really) and wanted to spool it with 300 yards of 65lb spectra braid ($$$). So was wondering how much of the cheaper 50lb braid to use as backing.

I ended up combining two techniques that I saw on YouTube:
1. Started spooling with the spectra, and finished with the backing
2. Reversed the order using an electric drill. Here’s how:
- put each line back on it’s spool by mounting the spool on an electric drill (and putting the reel on the lowest drag)
- spool the reel in the correct order

To do that I used a $15 spooler from Amazon, and for the drill I used the parts from the spooler combined with a screwdriver extension.

I just read it and slightly confused as well why you would need to do all that?

I think he wanted to have perfection in line spooling by not guessing how much backing needed to be added, to then consume the full spool of good braid he wanted on top to fill the reel? If not, then I'm totally clueless  :smt005

Exactly. I wanted to use up all 300 yards of the yellow (65lb spectra) line, and I didn’t know how much backing (blue line) to use in order to perfectly fill up the spool. I didn’t want to guess the amount of backing because this could lead to either not having enough room for the yellow, or having too much room (in which case the retrieve rate would be lower).

Well, I was certainly impressed at how full your new reel was haha

What I would like to know is what is your favorite knot to attach the line to the spool?  :smt003

Ah, I get it now.  I guess I didn't think of it like that because I don't put any lower test braid underneath.  I just put couple wraps of flex wrap and put braid directly on the reel.  300 yards is plenty, I would rather have all 65# braid directly tied to the reel if it was me.

I have this reverse stack of braid on my avet, with half 40lb and half 65 lb to a topshot.

The reasoning is that if you are getting towed by a hog and run out of that 65, you have that increased line capacity to hopefully tire something out. Of course the one time I was about to get spooled on a yf I tried to tweek my drag and ended up popping my topshot off...

Maybe its dumb since you are adding a knot in there that can be a point of failure, but typically the topshot is the weakest link so the entire thing doesn't really make any sense lol, I agree if you have the capacity to just get it spooled to the top w no knots, but my avet sx doesn't have much line capacity so I went this route.

Great method on filling spool, I currently use 2 older plastic shimano reels to figure out my spools, lots of trial and error or I just dont get all of the desired line on at the end and have to cut it.

I like the idea of using the cheap spool device and a drill to make the job faster.  Thanks for inspiring me!

I got a new Penn Fathom 40 (for no good reason really)

I buy stuff for no good reason all the time, haha.

I use a double overhead knot. This knot is used twice in double fisherman knot, which is what I use to connect braid to braid. Specifically, I put the line around the spool, then use 3 inches of the tag end to make the knot, on the line itself. Then I pull the line to tighten, and cut the tag. Bombproof.

I believe what you're describing is actually called an arbor knot save for the final stop knot.  Am I interpreting your explanation correctly?

Arbor is my favorite spool knot as well  :smt002  I also do some half hitches to be sure it never spins around the spool.  Harder to do on a conventional, unless you can remove the spool, like on a bait caster or on a spinning reel.
