Going to be in the area this weekend, not sure I'll be able to bring the yak down or have time to forage but I have a request from the SO to pick up some fresh sand dabs, and maybe some seasonal live invertebrates. Any idea where those can be purchased in the bay area, preferably in the south bay/SJ area?

Thanks,
Mike

Many fishermen spend their lives chasing fish, only to realize that it was themselves that they were chasing.

If you happen to be in the North Bay, Anna's Fish Market in Petaluma is my favorite market.

I think any Asian grocery store (H Mart, Ranch 99, etc.) will have invertebrates, but I doubt you'll find sand dabs.

If you're in the East Bay, Tokyo Fish Market in Berkeley or Yaoyasan and Ranch 99 in El Ceritto.

Tokyo is definitely one of the best.

When I lived in the City, Sun Fat on Mission was always the go-to place. Sounds like it's still as good as it ever was, but no doubt the prices reflect the costs of doing business in SF.

Just to add, they generally have a really good selection, in addition to having high quality products.

They carry sand dabs on occasion at the end of pier one fish market in Monterey. The place next door carries the smaller farm raised abalone as well.

The sand dabs fillets are IQF (individually quick frozen) and thaw out in about 15 minutes
They’re fairly good size as well

Oh well, wasn't able to find sand dabs.

Side note, sand dabs are my GF's favorite fish of all time for some reason. I'll take easy WAF points when I can get them. She wants them specifically, flounders don't exactly hit the spot. I can post some recipes of how we cook them if anyone is interested. I like to fry them whole then refry them in the wok with sauce or spices.

I may have convinced her to do a crab n dab charter sometime with me, and donate the crab away as we're still somewhat loaded in the freezer.

I'll try going to monterey sometime, with the weather we didn't really feel like making the trip down from SJ area during the flood warnings.
