Last thanksgiving I saw many abalone just walking the rocks in an average low tide south of Gualala.  I was surprised they closed the season for another five years.  It looked like they were recovering.

Ain't that some Texas logic, lol.

They are abundant in a lot of places in the intertidal.  The problem is slightly further out in the sub-tidal, where they haven't recovered nearly as well.  They need to be left alone.

Multiple people on another recent abalone post have pointed out that the abs have moved nearer to shore because their best habitat and foraging area just past the breakers has been overrun and largely decimated by urchins.  Abs showing up in the tidepools is largely a danger sign for the species.

I have not done this before but I purchased the equipment and required licenses.

What does an ab card cost these days?  :smt012

Well considering it’s closed for several more years, maybe something like what it cost a poocher back in 2018:

“360 days in the Mendocino County Jail, placed on probation for 36 months and ordered to pay a fine of $15,000. He is prohibited from obtaining a sport or commercial fishing license for life.”

I was joking. I’m well aware of the abalone situation.

I know, it wasn’t directed at you, I was just adding to it. I’ve been really surprised (aghast in some instances) by some people I know who read last year’s reg book and were sure the season was set to open.

Better question is...can we come along?  For education purposes, will be documenting only.
