I'll be on a local Seattle radio show today 8/11 around 4PM.   You can tune into the web broadcast at http://www.kjram.com/main.html

-Allen

Gonna be a busy day for the "Northwest Wild Country" crew tomorrow: in addition to our usual 120 minutes o' fun in the morning (6 to 8 a.m. on Sporstadio 950 KJR), Herzog and I will do a SECOND live show from Sportco's tent sale: 4 to 6 p.m.

I haven't figured out exactly who goes where yet, but here's the roster of names who will be joining us tomorrow as we double-down on "Wild Country":

PolePole!!!:Allen Sansano -- our own PolePole -- will give the blow-by-blow, down-and-dirty description of catching those crazy@ss salmon sharks on Bruce's cover. This is a must-listen.

Eric Linde, Pabst Blue Ribbon Fishing Team:Just talked to Linde, and, in his exact words: "The CR Buoy is *bleeping* going off!" Brace yourself, kiddies: the late August/early September coho bite at Buoy 10 going to be epic.

John Keizer, Salmon U.:Serving double duty tomorrow, Keizer will check in live from the Gig Harbor PSA Derby tomorrow morning, and then be back again with a derby wrapup/report in the afternoon.

Tony Floor, NMTA:"The Truth" has some True-isms that he wants to share about pinks, late Chinook and coho. I think I have a pretty strong source list, but, Tony talks to more saltwater guys in one day than I do in a week. He has updates on EVERY saltwater fishery in the state. So, if you have any requests you'd like to hear him talk about, post it here, or PM me!

Buzz Ramsey, Pure Fishing:Want to know the drill for Buoy 10 coho? You'll get it from the master.

David Johnson, David Johnson Sportfishing:You've seen his face and read his writing in STS and F&H News. Tomorrow, DJ fills us in on some of the coastal bay fisheries in Oregon (he was catching fish in Nehalem yesterday).

Chris Shaffer, Salmon & Steelhead Journal:Just got an e-mail from Shaffer, who's fishing (get this) the Red River in eastern Canada this week. You'll get an on-the-scene report from one of the greatest pike fisheries on the planet.

Dave Vedder, STS:Just got back from a 13-day trip to Russia. Dave will bring us along on the Kamckatka Experience as only Dave can do.

Jay Mohl, Jay's Clayoquot Ventures:Here's some good news from the west coast of Vancouver Island: fishing out of Tofino has been crazy-good for the past week, with a good mix of Chinook and coho. There's a fresh batch of Chinook coming, boys and girls.

Danny Snider, Worley Bugger Fly Co.:We continue to get requests for flyrod info, so, Danny will get us clued into the trout fisheries from the Yak to the high desert streams.

Doug Williams, Whistlin' Jack Lodge:Since we're talking about Eastside options, Doug will give us a report on the high-mountain lakes opportunities.

PLUS: Some surprises that I'm keeping up my sleeve. Okay, here's a hint: one of them involves a certain rock-n-roll guitar legend/Alpha-class bowhunter, and his upcoming concert at the Tacoma Dome.

Ted keeps following me around.  He was supposed to have been up in Valdez for a brown bear bow hunt the same time we were up there.

Hi Yakers:

Bow hunting is on the edge for me! I'm happy to just punch paper with my Bow.

The downloaded pictures are of a man who works for the US Forest Service in Alaska and his trophy bear.

He was out deer hunting last week when a large grizzly bear charged him from about 50 yards away. The guy emptied his 7mm Magnum semi-automatic rifle into the bear and it dropped a few feet from him. The big bear was still alive so he reloaded and shot it several times in the head.

The bear was just over one thousand six hundred pounds It stood 12' 6" high at the shoulder, 14' to the top of his head. It's the largest grizzly bear ever recorded in the  world.

Of course, the Alaska Fish and Wildlife Commission did not let him keep it as a trophy, but the bear will be stuffed and mounted, and placed on display at the Anchorage airport to remind tourists of the risks involved when in the wild.

Based on the contents of the bears stomach, the Fish and Wildlife Commission established the bear had killed at least two humans in the past 72 hours including a missing hiker.

The US Forest Service, backtracking from where the bear had originated, found the hiker's 38-caliber pistol emptied. Not far from the pistol was the remains of the hiker. The other body has not been found.

Although the hiker fired six shots and managed to hit the grizzly with four shots (the Service ultimately found four 38 caliber slugs along with twelve 7mm slugs inside the bear's dead body), it only wounded the bear and probably angered it immensely.

The bear killed the hiker an estimated two days prior to the bear's own death by the gun of the Forest Service worker.

Think about this:

If you are an average size man; You would be level with the bear's navel when he stood upright.  The bear would look you in the eye when it walked on all fours! To give additional perspective, consider that this particular bear, standing on its hind legs, could walk up to an average single story house and look over the roof, or walk up to a two story house and look in the bedroom windows.
