Congrats guys.  Sounds like a blast.  I'm curious as to the equipment you used.  How much line did the fish take off the reels and what pound test were you using?  Also rods, terminal rigging, etc.  The reason I'm asking is I'm considering spending the summer of '09 kayak fishing POW.  thanks

Those are some big fishes you guys got there.  Do all the yum yum yellow kayaks help in locating the schools of sharks? :smt005

I'm interested in the rods, reels and rigs you guys were using also???  Way to go on the sharks and I hope you can spare some of that meat when you guys get back.  JTF..

Lamiglas BFC 6080 rods and Avet 50W 2 speed reels loaded with 1000 yards of 100# plus spectra.  20 foot cable leader ... 1200# breaking strength!!!  Double 12/0 hooks.  Whole 5# pound pink salmon.  Slow trolled with ~60 feet of line out.

I'll be bringing a 50# box to San Jose.  Perhaps we'll have a shark eating party at the MBK tourney.

I'm in Victoria, BC right now continuing my summer vacation.  Caught the 3 biggest cabs of my life in the last 2 days at Sombrio, a 12 pounder and two 15's.  I'm off to Nootka Sound in the morning.  Full reports and pics once I get home in a week or so.

No, I'm JonS, founder of Kayak Fishing Stuff, who's now a full time kayak fisherman.     Business was getting in the way of fishing, so I sold it.

How much line did these fish take?  Was a 50W necessary or could one use a smaller reel?  Just curious.  I do have the big stuff but its so heavy.  Haven't used that kind of stuff since blue Marlin fishing.  Actually bigger stuff and possibly needed bigger as my first hooked Marlin was app. 1100#s.

Of course I have no perspective with how hard these fish pull, but it seems to me that substantially lighter tackle would be possible for targeting them from kayak.

On the kayak, we are not able to apply anywhere near the kind of leverage on a fish as can be applied from a boat, and the sleigh ride acts both to augment the drag and to preserve the amount of line on the spool.

Pulling vertically, you are also limited to some extent because of stability on the kayak.

Would 40#, 50#, or 60# class tackle be sufficient do ya think?

a very simple test would be to lob a jig at a PWC from your kayak and see how long it takes for the line to break,  :smt002.

seems like some accelerations and speeds would still break heavy line?

also depends on whether you have a "trophy class" human in the boat or a "dink" human,  :smt005.

Jon:
We think  smaller gear would definitely work for these fish.

Yes, it was the longest and toughest fight of my fishing career, NTM kayak fishing experience, but still the fish was done in about an hour for each of us.   When I first felt him pull, I thought I was in for a 3-hour fight. Believe me I was relieved to see the leader after 1/2 hour.  The fish was off again for another 30 minutes before I saw the leader again.

How much line?  Gee I don't really know, but I'd say never more than 300 yards, and most of the fight was with the shark sounding or hovering about 150 feet down, and moving around down there (sleigh ride!!)

Super heavy fish, really strong with a bad habit of tremendous jerks.  Lots of surviaval drag adjustments, so a lever drag is a necessity, I think.

A camping/sharking trip would be a gas!!  Howard McKim is the guy who can really handle the wire on these fish and he's already thinking towards next year.

This is an awesome experience.

Allen, thanks for the info.  I spoke with Troy last night and I'm very interested in going next year before heading to Baja.

I was thinking an Avet SX loaded with either 50 or 65# braid would be enough.  I got about a 110# sailfish on this reel, spooled with 30# and it was more then enough tackle.  My next step up would be my fin nor tycoon 4/0 which will easily hold more then a half mile of braid.
