The NOAA buoys used to forecast wind, waves and swell is like, 20 miles oout in the midddle of Monterey BAy.  REquires just a bit of extrapolation to take that info and make your prediction on what the nearshore area might be like, conditions-wise.

Here's a new buoy  thatt supplies real time data right at Steamer Lane in 66 FOW.   I am findingit veryhelpful.

The projected height always is higher than the observed height, so I'm guessing they are using different measurements, maybe the highest waves for the period vs
the average height.

For SC kayak anglers, it's in just the right spot - where if it's starting to get sporty, I notice it there first, and I'm still not real far from the shelter of Lighthouse Pt., and it's in a fishy depth.
