Nice...

Sorry I couldn't join you guys, I'm working on my WAF points which are in serious shape by the way.  Could you believe I didn't tell the wife and daughter about the GWS at BH?  Oh yeah, what I figured was that if they didn't know I could fish without them raising an eyebrow.  Hey, let me continue this discussion under General Talk.

Gary

Gary -

Smart move. My wife saw it on the news so it's a no go for me for awhile or until I can afford a shark shield.

Etienne

WTG. You are on a roll. PM me if you want to hook up as long as it is not shark infested. :smt003

Great pics of some fatty fish guys!

To answer a few Qs:
jmairey, you will still be able to fish south of Molera after the closures take effect. Although its a pretty far paddle and you'll be fighting the wind in one direction. The southern boundary of the Pt Sur Marine Reserve is at Cooper Point, which is about 2 miles south of Molera. Might be an epic destination for a wknd camping trip with the yaks. Here's the secret beach you're supposed to camp on:

justyakit, looks like their stringers of vermillion, olives, blues, etc in the river; not salmon. I WISH there were still salmon in the Big Sur. Well, there are a few left. And there is a decent steelhead run. This is supposedly the southernmost coastal river that supports a consistent population of steelhead. Although, there are a few small creeks to the south that have remnant runs of steelies...like Limekiln Creek for example.
The Big Sur is open to fishing for steelhead below the HWY 1 bridge from December 1 to March 7 each winter. But it is entirely C+R, and you can only use barbless artificials, and you need to have a Steelhead Report Card on your person and filled out, and you can only fish on Wed, Sat, Sunday. AND you have to call (831)649-2886 to listen to the DFG recording to hear if its reached the 40CFS flow minimum requirement.
Yeah, they make it pretty difficult to figure out these regs these days. But this is just ridiculous!
The river is open to fishing for trout above the Gorge from the last Sat in May to October 31. But this upper stretch of river is difficult to reach. You either have to hike up the river to the gorge (which is a very popular swimming spot..a must-see) and swim up it until you reach and climb the waterfall. Or you hike the ridge trail for about 5 miles before cutting across to the river.

I know just about every stretch of that river below the HWY 1 bridge. And a lot of it above the gorge too. This past steelhead season stunk because we didn't get enough rain though.

And, I totally blew it with the GWS attack. I told my wife right away. And my parents. THEN I realized I should've kept that story to myself...D'OH!

Sorry for the T-J, guys!
Thanks again for the great report and awesome pics!

can you fish south from that launch after the closure?
is it totally dead or is there a way to fish from it?

The south end will be closed too. I dug this info up from MPA. Basically, 2 miles north and 2 miles south from Big Sur river mouth.

PK's version of answers to some questions are better.
