Did the arryo seco riverbed triathalon (creek stumble, rock jump, swim) this weekend (east big sur), and fished a bit along the way.  There were small rainbow in the upper part and squawfush/pikeminnow in the lower part.  Managed a jambalya one nite w/ trout and crawfish-  Had a great time but missed the wife and the yak!

Here's a pic of a 12" and some crawfish tapas (some assembly required).

Wow, never heard of the arroyo Seco triathalon but I have a lot of experience with the Seco. One of my favorite local rivers to fish! Especially the upper reaches above Escondido Camp southwest of Fort Hunter Liggett. I've got some nice steelhead there (pre-ocean) up to 20 inches. Hiked up to Lost Valley once and it was absolutely beautiful...with plenty of native bows.

I bet the water is really low this year. Where were the Start and Finish located? I might have to join you next time! I've hiked from the main Park up to the horsebridge (near the gorge) and traversed back down the river. That was an experience.

Man, I need to get up there soon. Its been a while.

Thanks for the report and pic!

I made up the triathalon part!  :smt002   We stumbled down from Escondido to the bottom w/ packs on over three days!  Fishing was okay (on the small side), but I think most fish had headed upstream due to the dryness this year.  There were actually a few sections that were truly "seco"  (dry).  Lots of squawfish in the lower section.

Here are a few more pics!

That sounds fun! When you say the bottom, do you mean the main park? Thats far man.
I stumbled upon a school of big squaws once and was convinced they were steelhead...until I caught one! There are a ton of em in that poor river. You're probably right about the trout migrating upstream during low water years. It makes sense that they would want the cooler water.

Use to hike the entire route back in the day. Would get dropped off at the east gate and fish and hunt small game to the west gate. That is some beautiful country and back in the 70's just prime with great trout fishing. Thanks for the reminder.
