That sounds like an awesome trip. I think i may need to reach out to him to learn some tricks down south.
I've NOT been successful with yellowtail. Still trying to learn La Jolla after all these years. Mostly catching green back and fly lining them.  :smt010 :smt010

Hi Keith
I would highly recommend him as a guide but be ready for a long day. After 13 hours he still wants to continue fishing in the dark...
This might be last year for his guide service.
The best way to get hold of him is either a phone call or text.
You can find detail information from the following link:
http://www.seasamurai.com/TripRates.html

I plan to post a video and photos of my trip hopefully tomorrow.

Are you making fun of my tights???  :smt044 Nobody told me they aren’t allowed and I’m wearing them in a bunch of my pictures :smt003 also sunburn sucks!

No, in fact, Just the opposite.  I heard from Ex Kayaker and Pole Pole that they're hoping you could post some pix of you in your tights while off the water.  Maybe a couple selfies from a hotel room, or posed sitting on a wide staircase?

I had a wonderful yellowtail trip with Sea Samurai (Kevin Nakada)

You can watch my video from the following link (Sorry for the bad GoPro angle, couldn't find a good spot to mount it):

I arrived at La Jolla on Friday night and got ready.  I met Kevin at La Jolla launch around 5:45 AM and hit the water around 6:10 AM.
We searched for squids for an hour but no luck.  We move north to catch some live baits and Kevin caught over 40 mackerel within 15 minutes using a sabiki rig.

Kayak: Hobie Pro Angler 14 provided by Kevin
Tackles: 65lbs braided mainline with 30 lbs leader after we lost some fish we changed to 40 lbs leader.
Fishing Method: fly lining mackerel trolling and some drifting - free spool and waited 6-8 seconds after a bite to set the hook.
Fishing Duration and Distance: 13 hours and over 20 miles (Lost 3 lbs)

Total bite: 5 (didn't give adequate time for YT to eat the bait on two bites)
Total hook set: 3 (one fish broke 30 lbs leader)
Total fish landed: 2 plus 1 (reeled in one fish provided by Kevin)

Additional recommendation: wear long-sleeve shirts and long pants to protect from sunscreen.  Take a seat cushion (PA-14 sear was very uncomfortable for me).  Plenty of water and food. A large cooler to take your catch home would be great. It should exceed 40".

I had a wonderful trip and highly recommend his service.  However, this might be his last year for guiding.  The best way get hold of him is by a phone call or text message.
You can get additional information from his website: http://www.seasamurai.com/index.html

Thanks for the report Paul! I'm going to try free lining some macks tomorrow around La Jolla. Do you put any weight on your line? How far out did you let the mackerel run? So lucky you guys got 40 mackerel. It always seems like I'm running out of bait, and then I resort to fishing for rockfish. :/

No weight on my line and it was out approximately 100 yard.  Look for baits at shallow water using your FF.  After you catch your first bait, use it to catch more.  Chum some cut off mackerel and bait one of you sabiki with it.  The best time for YT in accordance with Kevin was between 9 AM - 10 AM and after 3 PM.  Also, try to catch some squids.  It was his first choice for bait.

Good luck and let me how it was.

This seems to be the good area for bait. The times I’ve gone I’ve loaded up on tons of macs with some sardines in the mix just off the scripts pier outside the protected area.

If anyone of you guys decides to go La Jolla, make sure to pay attention to the Marine Protected Areas and regulations.
You might want to input this information into your FF if your chart doesn't show the information.

You can get the detail information from the following link: https://www.wildlife.ca.gov/Conservation/Marine/MPAs/Network/Southern-California

Thanks for the info!!!  I ended up with a bunch of 8-10 inch mackerel that I jigged up at the mission bay harbor, probably too big but very lively! I motored over to La Jolla and fly lined those bad boys but I lost some to a few seals, then got bored and switched to rockfish. Ended up catching a big shark on my rockcod rig which I managed to release.

I'm going back out again tomorrow! Do you manage to fly line more than 1 mackerel? I tried to do 2, but they ended up all over the place running every which direction and I felt I was constantly managing their lines. I may try to fly line 1 mackerel and then dropper loop the other one.

Thanks

I don't think 8-10 inch is too big.  We used a similar size.
Just one mackerel at a time, otherwise they will tangle.  The guide and I kept approximately 30 feet apart when we were trolling together.  The best time for YT is in the morning around 9:30 AM and after 3 PM.  My guide told me that most people give up or get bored prior to 3 PM and won't able to catch any YT.

Good luck and hope you land some tomorrow.

Yes, goes in one side of the face and comes out other side.
