More Beach hali's

I snuck out again this morning to Captiola Beach.  Watched a guy catch a big striper with live chovie from the wharf.  Talked to Cigar Gary who caught a 24 pound striper from the surf the other day with pencil popper.  I worked the 2d and 3d cove up for about 12 undersized flatties.

Fuzzy Tom was there on his Yak, he joined me on the beach for some casting.  Right before I left I gave him one of my little hairraisers to use.  the swimbait he was casting didn't seem to get hit.  Hope he caught something after I left.

Later I will post pic of one of my small flatties.  I also got two bigger than this but none over 20".

Really, really fun.  Some of the hits were literally at my feet!~  I WATCHED on small halibut swim up and smack my lure as I was lifting it from the water.  Of course, I dropped it right back in.  the flatty went round and round chasing it, but never got a good bite at it.  finally gave up and swam away.  Nearly gave me a heart attack on that 1st hit, though, it looked like an F-16 swooping in...mid water in about 4 feet depth.  Also a shot of the legal I got on sunday......figured out the download process for my olympus.  just plug the camera in and it shows on the Mac desktop.  How easy!

Capitola is a good place to be fishing right now.

Thx fer da port&pics Allen!   looks and reads like you had and are STILL, having it good down there.
anyone ever target them surf-stripers? from the yak?  too much to deal with in the surf-zone or are they out beyond that?    only place up here that they are at consistantly is Ocean Beach and there are never any yakers attempting that......but on the ankle-high surf days it could be done( i think)

Allen - your the only guy I know who can catch consistently in Santa Cruz  How about a guided trip?

Is it just me or does there seem to be A LOT of small halibut this year.  Not just in Santa Cruz, but in SF Bay as well.  Good news for the future?

Just a warning Allen...these reports are killing me! I think the fish know I'm busy with my pregnant wife so they decided it was safe to start feeding+spawning again! AAAAGGGHHH!!!

Although, I did just go pick up a pkg of some pink Zoom flukes. Were you using those again today?

Allen'  You know, I really hope so.  This nursery area I'm farming is pretty historical for small flatties, and the weather/surf is perfect right now.  they could be gone next week, moved out if the waves build. 

But, it feels like more halibut in general this year for sure, and more juveniles than I've ever played with.

In Santa Cruz it may be a result of banning those ^%$@# trawlers that were snagging them all at 18-200 FOW last year and the year before that. No more trawlers=more halibut?  Logical, and I hope it's true.

Even Kenny Stagnaro feels like there are more fish.  More like a "normal" year.  He got one on a shrimp fly jig on the Velocity the other day....18lbs next to the Mile Bouy.

Mooch, I don't know if I want you anywhere near me.....LOL....I'm aftaid the jinx might come back like last year when I couldn't catch ONE flatty, and you caught one every time we fished together!!

PK:  I used the pink fluke for a few casts then switched to a Mister Twister hairaiser about 1 ounce head with the pure white worm body.  Worked darn good!  BTW, we have to meet and go fishing together.  I think we have a few mutual firends (lars Deva etc), we live in the same area, and we like the same fishing (including SL steelhead)  Just do what I do, like I did today.....

1.  get up at 5am. 
2.  make coffee with no noise..
3.  sneak out of the house before anyone gets up

leaving a note for the wife is optional.  Seriously, she really needs you now, and she needs you in top form.  Top form for us includes being "well fished"  Mood is better, physical health is better, attotude is better.  We are talking win/win here.

yeah, white scampi should work good, just use a small one with light weight.  Or, hit the Angler's choice on 41st and buy a few Mister Twisters and white fluke bodies.  I got hits and my big one on a pink fluke, so we know that will work too, but white seems to get the most hits.  good luck!! hope you slay em!

this guy is named andy and he is the owner of Ski Shop Santa Cruz.  He really wants to learn about fishing around here.  He certainly has the surfboard for it.
