I was looking at some post and I see there are people from the Humboldt area. I live just outside of Eureka in King Salmon. I just got my first kayak, it is a 10' pontoon kayak. It is an old Kiwi MENDACINO, which has been re-modled into the ANGLER. I have started to outfit it, but do not have as many accessories as I want (and probably never will  :smt013). I keep trying to go out in Humboldt Bay but have not found a time with calm enough wind in my area. In my area, we have canals coming off our back yards that lead right to the bay, or the power plant, but they wont let you paddle through there.
I hope to hook up with other yakers  :smt006, from the Humboldt area.
Coolness,

Let's fish!

Sebastes2, Welcome aboard! Not from your area but the Bay Area and I am curious to see a few more pics of your yak. So if you could would you post a few more pics of her and maybe a few of the members could suggest a few ideas for you. Frank

Happy to see you here, Sebastes!
You're groundbreaking-shore-rockfishing-with-artificials-tactics will surely give you a headstart as a kayak fisherman.
Glad to see you posting here. Like I said, this is an awesome site with extremely knowledgeable and consciencious members. Hopefully you get a chance to fish with swellrider and abking and the other northcoast members.

I look forward to seeing more mods on that sweet yak too!

Great yak for sight-fishing :smt007

Sebastes2   I would highly recommend purchasing leg straps.  From the photo it doesn't appear that you are seated deep enough to use your legs or hips for balance, which would present a problem to maintain your balance in waves, and even in the wind without them.  It would be especially difficult if you launched from the ocean.

Sin_Coast,
Good to hear from you partner :smt006. I can't wait to get started using artificials from the yak. It will be a whole new experience I'm thinking. I will have to start working on rods for this application, which I was already planning on doing. I'm still trying to fish from it every chance I get, but it seems like the wind is waiting for me. It has been calm in the mornings, but has been pickin up around noon. I could launch it from a diffent part of the bay, but all the good fishing is in that area.

skygreen,
Thanks for the recommendation. I was thinkin I need leg and foot straps. Not so much the leg straps until you brought it up, but I was definitely thinkin of the foot straps.

Frankfishing,
It is 36" and I can't compare it to other yaks, cause it's my first, but I think it manuvers alright. I was out in the wind the other day and another yaker came up close to me. I was hoping we could chat but he gave me a wierd look and split. His yak was way faster than mine and seemed to handle the wind alot better. It was a sit in and was not outfitted for fishin at all (I didn't have my fishin gear either) and he was across the bay in no time.

Mooch,
I mostly jetti fish and unless it is real clear water, I don't know how much sight fishin I'll be doing. I rarely get to the lake.

yakuza,
I plan on gettin a trollin motor.

Hey there!  Sorry I missed your original post, Sebastes2.  Welcome aboard.  Sounds like you're the closest member to me now - I'm in Loleta.  I work in Eureka and like to fish Petrolia and Shelter Cove whenever possible.  Trinidad is a good option too.  I'd do a jetty run some time too - especially if the salmon come in closer this Summer.  Hope to see you around.  Feel free to get in touch any time.

Eric

PS:  cool ride, Dude!  Reminds me of the quirky space cruisers that would show up on 60's episodes of the original Star Trek!  8>}
