I'm having a heck of a time figuring out whether or not I can use my photo here for the artwork on the back of my GS shirts and hoods.

I got it digitized, but it's not what I want - they did a crappy job, and anyone I seek out online or locally here in Humboldt doesn't have an answer other than "our artists will work with it once you place your order".  I don't feel like I can place an order without knowing what my final artwork looks like...

Advice welcome!

Here's part of the digitized image - the hills look OK, but the water is totally one color, and I don't like the detail of the yakker - especially the hand.

Are you asking for an SVG file?

I haven't heard of SVG.  I was told I need it digitized in EPS or PDF format.

Eric: Contact me if you still want help. I do large scale landscape photography work using high end digital cameras. The small jpg you posted is very noisy, probably due to a combination of jpg compression and under exposure. Do you have an original RAW file, or is it a jpg, also. For your design you would want to have a file with sufficient pixel data to have an image that doesn't look soft. It also should be free of digital noise at the desired print size(s). I can help you with all that, if you wish. You can PM me, or call me on my cell phone: 415-305-6435. Randy Smith

Eric: Tomorrow before 9 a.m. or after 4 p.m. would be best for me. I've attached to link to a number of galleries with images that I have made. Most of the images can be printed to 24 x 36" while remaining very sharp and free of noise. Of course, that's in part because they generally emanate from a 36 megapixel DSLR RAW file which gives lots of latitude for post processing. In your image, the transition from the jpeg image to a vector graphic representation results in nearly a complete loss of textural detail in the water and elsewhere. That's a problem that can be remediated.

Thanks Randy!! Excellent info. There is no raw file; I assume just a jpg if it was shot with a waterproof Fuji digital camera.
Is it as simple as opening the file in PS and saving as PSD then export as an svg?
Btw great photos on your gallery Randy...I see Emigrant Wilderness in there too :-)

I haven't spoken with Eric, and don't know what he is looking for in terms of an image. The jpeg file can be converted to a PSD, with subsequent alterations not resulting in file degradation, as would be the case with the jpeg. Furthermore, the image as shared in this thread is 600 x 700 pixels , way too small to print in any viable size. Presumably the image from the camera was larger. Even if an image is noisy, saving in a lossless format can enable modifications without the degradation. Comparing the original jpeg with the vector file, it is clear that there is a tremendous loss of detail in the hills and the water. That may be something which Eric is looking for. Otherwise, preservation of the details through careful file modification and noise reduction would result in an image with more detail. Additionally, if there are concerns about the way the hand looks in the vector file, as a JPEG / PSD file the hand can be reconfigured and cloned into a more gratifying appearance. Anyway, all of these things are up to the aesthetic interests of Eric, but certainly the file should be larger if it is going to be on a sweatshirt, or even a hat, in order to have sufficiently sharp edges and have a "sharp" appearance. I have not heard from Eric and will wait to hear from him to determine whether he would like any input. The basic image looks like it could be a great logo. Randy

Big thanks to Randy - we had a nice phone conversation, and I feel closer to achieving my goal.

I've got to do some homework, and hopefully I'll have a final product to show off soon.  :smt001
