Hi Guys,

I am outfitting my first kayak for the coming season and I have a couple of Ugly Stik Tiger rods which I plan to fish on the kayak. I know that these are a popular choice for many but I'm having trouble getting them to fit the Scotty rod holder due to how thick they are at the handle. The butt of the rod also has a flared stop which could be sanded down but even still I noticed that the base of the rod would still be a very tight fit. Any ideas on how to overcome this or are there wider alternatives to the Scotty rod holder that would accommodate the Ugly Stik Tiger rod?

Thanks
J.

If you are using this in the ocean for bottom fish you really don't need a rod holder and really should not put the rod in one anyway out there. When you snag the bottom it will have a high likelihood of flipping you over if it is in holder. You WILL snag the bottom too.

If you do want to use a rod holder use one of this style. It will fit that rod with no issues and you will have a better chance of getting it out faster.....http://scotty.com/product/no-349-rodmaster-ll-with-no-mount/

The rocket launcher styles will fit those handles.

The fat handle on those rods -- and the length behind the reel seat -- always bothered me for kayak fishing. I took all the EVA foam off the handle and shortened it to 10" and then rewrapped the area with bicycle handlebar wrap. I like them a lot better now - the handle isn't as fat and I can maneuver it better from the seated kayak position.

Cheers,
Brad

Here’s a picture of one of the modified handles. Sorry for the sideways shot.

I had the same rod, rod holder, and problem as you.  My solution was to shave down the butt of the Tiger to a point where I could shove it in the rod holder.  And then I sold that kayak along with your rod holder.  On my new kayak I use the Scotty Rocket launcher and like them much more for trolling.
