Howdy folks! Just found the forum and thought some folks might like this one! I have been poke poling for 25 years as a very effective way of bringing home the bacon (or fish and eels). We posted this vid to Youtube a few months back, but I thought I would share it here too in case someone was looking for tips on getting out poke poling for well under a dollar!
Loving this forum folks!

I've never had a ton of faith in the knots and leader material of pre-snelled hooks. I'd definitely tie my own hooks on some heavy mono before attaching them to the hanger. Just my .02

Bend a snap swivel directly to the wire and cut the line. Attach just the hook to the swivel.

Making the rig, no problem. In the limited number of times I’ve attempted poke poling, I’ve had zero success  :smt009
I think I’ve git the basics...low tides, find hole or crevice, dangle tempting bait in front of fishy or eel, wait for the magic...

Am I missing a detail or two that would make the difference? Or do I just need to find a few spots that havent been picked clean?

I make my poke poles similarly,  but with an old fishing rod,  80lb braid and a 1/0 live bait hook.

Thanks for the feedback! I agree that a swivel and not relying on pre-made knots on the leader is a good idea...though I have never had one of these knots break and have been successfully poke poling for well over 25 year...that said, that was a jinx wasn't it?

@Trutta, it sounds like you are doing everything correct. I would just say, that you should never underestimate pokepoling directly below the rock you are standing on. I often catch eels and fish in this way. Just probe the poke pole with some squid as far back in a crack or under an overhang as you can and let it sit. If you don't have a bite in 30 seconds, move the bait a little in the same crack and see if there is a fishy ther. If you have no luck in 5 min, move to the next hole. My girlfriend and I caught 14 fish and eels the other day doing this in 2 hrs!

@FishingAddict, we just made a traditional boat with all stone tools, so hopefully a video will come of that soon! If it were not forecast to be so windy this weekend my GF and I were planning to kayak to a secret clamming spot... but I agree... we will get some good yak footage out there soon!

@ Sin Coast, We will do our best to get some good fish porn out there for ya!
